Season 3's final episode will officially change a massive battle in the Targaryen civil war, altering how it was depicted in Fire and Blood. The episode had a heavy focus on dragons, with everything from Helaena's Dreamfyre vision to the surprise return of Sunfyre, who rescued Aegon at a pivotal moment. But another core development came during a conversation between Ormund Hightower and Ulf the White. The latter, growing disillusioned under Rhaenyra's command, listens as Ormund offers him Driftmark if he switches sides.

Did you ride to glory — or fall from the sky?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Nina Lopez-Corrado explained how the moment lays the groundwork for the Battle of Tumbleton, a decisive moment in the Dance of the Dragons that House of the Dragon season 3 has been building toward. The director teased how the battle won't play out the same way it did in the book, with showrunner Ryan Condal's vision of the upcoming battle being in line with the characters. She explained book purists may be upset, but promises it'll be a beneficial change.

I do think you should start refreshing your memories for the Battle of Tumbleton.
We do deviate just a little bit in episode 7 from what’s originally in the books and, personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books. I know that’s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you’re gonna see in 7 that’ll carry on into 8 were really executed strongly by the writers and also by the actors.
House of the Dragon's characters have gone through a number of changes because of the show's decision to use the book as a guideline rather than adapting it one-to-one. Season 3, episode 7 alone showcased some of these aspects, such as Helaena's trepidation about riding dragons and Sunfyre seemingly coming back from the dead, despite only being severely wounded in the book. It appears the conversation between Ormund and Ulf will be no different, the Hightower promising him Driftmark and the Lord of the Tides title, both currently held by the captive Corlys Velaryon.
In Fire and Blood, the Battle of Tumbleton sees Ulf and Hugh Hammer betray the Blacks, siding with the Greens before burning Tumbleton to the ground. This led to the death of multiple important figures in the Dance of the Dragons, including Ormund Hightower himself. It was the first of two battles for Tumbleton during the war, the second of which leads to even more major casualties as the Greens and Blacks duke it out between one another. This blood-soaked conflict appears to be what season 3's major moments are building toward.
However, as Lopez-Corrado states, the show's rendition of the battle isn't going to be exactly the same as the novel. As of season 3, episode 7, Ulf is the only dragonseed to have been offered anything in return for betraying Rhaenyra, while Hugh, though disillusioned, remains outside the conversation. The pair have also been shown to care about the commonfolk, making it uncertain if their burning of Tumbleton will really be influenced by Ormund's command — especially when the Greens are already in control of the city.
With just one episode to go, though, speculation can only push the eventual developments so far. House of the Dragon is gearing up for a very big moment that acts as a turning point in the war, one that will define how the forthcoming final season plays out. After plenty of buildup, it appears the show is finally going to be depicting one of the first big, successive battles that transpires near the war's twilight, confirming a plethora of major events in the process.
