JJ Abrams' Hit 5-Season CIA Thriller Series Sets Free Streaming Release Date

The prolific creator known for launching the TV show Lost took his talents to the big-screen when he got behind the camera for Tom Cruise’s action-packed spy movie Mission: Impossible III. That successful gig led to Abrams being recruited by more huge franchises, first taking the captain’s chair for a Star Trek reboot, then blasting off for a galaxy far, far away for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. More earth-bound but no less exciting was Abrams’ pre-Lost TV effort, which is about to get a new streaming release.
Alias established its creator, executive producer, writer, director, and score composer as a big-time player in TV, and fans of the Jennifer Garner-led series can soon binge their way through the whole thing without having to pay a dime, as the five-season show hits free streamer PlutoTV on August 1.
According to the show's synopsis, Alias “follows college student Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner), as she is recruited to become a spy for SD-6 and evolves into a double agent for the CIA when she discovers SD-6 is actually a terrorist organization.” Rotten Tomatoes records a fresh rating of 86% for the series, with its critical peak coming in season 5, which scores a perfect 100%.
Besides launching Garner to stardom as the disguise-wearing lead character, Alias was also a key work in the career arc of Bradley Cooper, who was a main player in seasons 1 and 2 before being written out of the show at his own behest (he would later return for a handful of guest appearances). The show also marked a major turning point for Abrams as he evolved from a writer-for-hire into a TV creator with a command of multiple genres, a path that would eventually lead him to becoming one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers.
Abrams’ career-boosting spy series continues to enjoy a strong following 20 years after airing its finale, and is also seen as influential on TV in general. ScreenRant lauded the series in a January 2026 article naming the best spy thriller shows, saying of it, “The series blends traditional espionage with serialized mythology, balancing case-of-the-week missions alongside long-running conspiracies. Its emotional core comes from Sydney’s double life and fractured relationships, particularly with her father, Jack Bristow (Victor Garber)."
The articles goes on to say, “Alias stood out because of its commitment to its character-driven stakes. Betrayals had lasting consequences, and alliances constantly shifted. While the series embraced heightened spy tropes, its focus on trust and identity gave it depth. Alias helped shape modern TV spy thrillers by proving serialized espionage could sustain long-term storytelling.”
