Baldur's Gate 3 Has A Voice Line You Will Never Hear Without Mods

Baldur's Gate 3 Has A Voice Line That Accounts For An Impossible Scenario

A Mind Flayer in Baldur's Gate 3. There are an alient creature with tentacles for a mouth.

Three years after launch, I thought we might have found everything there is to find in Baldur's Gate 3. But no, somehow, fans are still at it, and this latest discovery may point to some cut content.

A while ago, Baldur's Gate 3 fans found an odd piece of dialogue at the start of the game. They found that the Mind Flayer who bosses you around on the Nautiloid has a separate line of dialogue where it tells you to "find a thrall" - whereas usually, it would call you a thrall. Fans wondered why this was even in the game, and now, a player messing around with mods may have figured it out.

Redditor ImpressiveLie7365 found that modding the game to play as a Mind Flayer will trigger this line from the other Mind Flayer. True enough, I tested this myself, and it worked. Curiously, the line is also spoken by the voice actor the Mind Flayer had during early access, not the one who replaced them, suggesting that whatever was meant to trigger this was dropped before the game fully launched.

Why Does Baldur's Gate 3 Have A Fallback In Case You're A Mindflayer In Act 1? Here Are The Theories

When we covered this line's discovery previously, it was theorised that the line would trigger if Us started the cutscene. However, despite a few attempts, I couldn't get Us to start it. Admittedly, this is after Larian patched the game to ensure that the player character would almost always lead the conversation, but I couldn't even get Us to open the door to start the cutscene, so I'm not so convinced that this is the reason the line exists.

If this line is supposed to be there for Us, I would guess it was from a potential build where Us took up a full companion slot, and thus was able to start the cutscene.

So, does this mean there were plans to have the player transform into a Mind Flayer before Act 1 has even properly started? I am not so convinced. The only similar theory I have here is that, maybe, you were originally supposed to be able to level up your Mind Flayer abilities here, rather than having to wait further in the main story. If you had done this, maybe the mindlflayer would have seen you as one of their own.

But that wouldn't explain why it triggered here - when the player is a full Mind Flayer, not just a player character who's noshed on a few tadpoles. So, I present my own theory: there may have been a temporary illithid companion at some point. I will emphasise temporary there - I'm not suggesting we were supposed to have a Mind Flayer around the campfire - but perhaps there would have been an uneasy alliance with one of the Mindl Flayers onboard to ensure we don't all die in the hells. If so, they might have been able to start the cutscene.

Whatever the case, it's great to get a bit more of an understanding of how you can trigger this. There's clearly something in the character tags for Mind Flayers that triggers this line, and that is fascinating.
