Matt Groening confirms Simpsons Hit and Run is 'coming back' with D23 expo tongue slip — Gaming

Pour yourself a glass of Duff Cola, crack open the strawberry iced donuts, and get ready to flick over from your latest Itchy and Scratchy rerun, as Matt Groening just broke the internet.

The famed creator of The Simpsons appeared on a panel at D23 yesterday, stealing the thunder from some blockbuster Marvel announcements that detailed the new X-Men MCU expansion following Sadie Sink's portrayal of Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and showcased the biggest lore drop yet for Avengers: Doomsday.

Despite the Marvel overload, it was Groening who is grabbing the headlines, though, as he sent the entire gaming community into a frenzy as he confirmed the news we've all been waiting for.

Rumours of a Simpson's Hit and Run remake have been ramped up recently, and it looks like the leaks were right.

Simpson's Hit and Run is 'coming back'

Appearing on the panel to promote the new Simpsons Movie, Groening was directly asked about a sequel to the iconic game, given the movie is getting a second iteration, and he caught the crowd - and his fellow panel companions - by surprise as he let his tongue slip.

"That would certainly be a treat," said The Simpsons showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman.

"Speaking out of turn, I think the original game is coming back in some form," Groening added.

This clearly hit panic stations as Selman immediately added, "Or not," followed by a chorus of nervous chuckles.

The question was caught on camera by the LADbible team in attendance at D23.

By 'original game,' it's likely that this was in direct response to the question regarding Hit and Run, but could also allude to Road Rage, which came earlier.

Fans have been calling for a Hit and Run remake for the best part of a decade, with the 2003 title having been made for the PlayStation 2, and the rumour mill started to produce concrete evidence of a series return last year.

But it's clear that The Simpsons team has been testing the waters for how popular a Hit and Run remake could actually be, and have been impressed by the yellow invasion across the gaming industry in the last year.

"We have had fun with some recent collaborations. We did Fortnite x Simpsons, which crashed the Fortnite servers, and we did Monopoly Go, which was another massive hit. People are so hungry for it," said co-producer and writer Rob LaZebnik.

Selman added, "The Fortnite thing was really cool, and the Fortnite people really put in a lot of great Easter eggs and references from the show.

"I think it's the only thing keeping Fortnite going," he added in jest.

Having weighed up just how wild fans can be over Simpsons collaborations, even Groening himself has whetted his appetite for a Hit and Run return, and we could even expect an announcement of sorts as the movie sequel airs in September 2027
