This 100-hour Steam RPG just dropped to $2 and is an open-world alternative to Skyrim

A Skyrim-like open-world RPG has just dropped to $2 on Steam and is a perfect alternative to the series while we wait for The Elder Scrolls VI.

We’re still likely a few years off from being able to play the next game in the Elder Scrolls series, but there are plenty of alternatives to play in the meantime, which should offer a similar experience.

Games like Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance have provided us with familiar experiences over the years, but if you’re looking for something else, might we recommend this new $2 deal on Steam at the moment?

The game in question is Outward, an open-world role-playing game released in 2019, which has all the shades of big RPGs like Skyrim.

Developed by Nine Dots Studio, which would release last year’s Lost in Prayer and are currently working on a few other RPG projects, Outward was the studio’s first big success on the platform.

Outward is a must-play RPG if you want a Skyrim-like experience with some hardcore elements

Similar to Skyrim, as well as many other RPGs found on Steam, Outward offers an “immersive RPG experience” with a huge open world to explore, with elements of survival and soulslikes also being present. However, it also does a lot of interesting stuff you wouldn’t normally expect in a game like this.

Instead of playing the hero or chosen one, your character in Outward is extraordinarily ordinary, just a simple adventurer exploring the world. You’re not strong or powerful enough to take on some of this world’s most formidable creatures, so you’re required to hide or defend yourself against any threats that come your way.

Outward’s world also features a lot of different hazardous environmental conditions which can hurt you, such as infectious diseases that can make you weaker. Different survival mechanics such as eating, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep are also present to add an extra degree of challenge.

What’s more, you can also play it in multiplayer with another player, with either online or local co-op being possible options, making a good game to play with a friend.

You can now pick up Outward on Steam for $1.99 / £1.74 / €1.99, a massive discount of 95% down from its regular price of $40.

It’s also available in two bundles: the Nine Dots Supporter Bundle, which includes the studio’s other games GoD Factory: Wingmen and Lost in Prayer, as well as the Survive Together bundle, which also features Fade in Silence.

The version of the game which appears on Steam is the Definitive Edition, which includes both DLCs The Soroboreans and The Three Brothers, as well as new content and quality-of-life improvements.

With a sequel confirmed for release in early 2027, now seems like a pretty good time to pick up Outward on Steam. Outward 2 releases on February 8th, 2027, as an early access title.
