Michael Bay's 91-Minute Genre Thriller Returns As Global Streaming Hit

A psychological thriller produced by Michael Bay has become a worldwide streaming hit 17 years after it was first released.

The longtime filmmaker is known for directing movies like the Transformers franchise, Bad Boys, Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. He's also produced several horror films, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Purge, Ouija and A Quiet Place. His most recent project was the Meghann Fahy thriller Drop in 2025.

The Dennis Quaid-Led Film Was Originally Overlooked

In 2009, Bay produced the thriller Horsemen with award-winning actor Dennis Quaid, Zhang Ziyi, Lou Taylor Pucci, Clifton Collins Jr., Patrick Fugit and Peter Stormare. At the time, it was largely overlooked because it only had a limited theatrical window before being released on DVD. Now, though, the film is seeing a resurgence on the global stage.

As of August 11, 2026, Horsemen is No. 9 on Lionsgate+'s Top 10 global movies chart, behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Feng Shui Master & the Pregnant Ghos, Insidious, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, John Wick: Chapter 2, Limitless, Insidious: Chapter 2 and Insidious: Chapter 3. Rounding out the Top 10 is Divergent.

While Horsemen is not available on Lionsgate+ in the United States, it is streaming in Germany, where it currently ranks No. 3 on Lionsgate+'s Top 10 chart. In the U.S., the film is available on Prime Video, Tubi, PlutoTV and The Roku Channel.

Bay produced Horsemen with Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, while Jonas Åkerlund served as director and David Callaham wrote the script.

In the movie, Quaid plays a detective named Aidan Breslin whose family life fractures after his wife's passing. He throws himself into his work and realizes that he and the murder suspects he's looking into have some disturbing connections to each other, with the investigation also uncovering odd associations with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

During its limited run in theaters, Horsemen only grossed $2.4 million at the box office and was widely panned by critics, who gave it a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score isn't much better at 25%.

Horsemen Is A Perfect Replacement For Se7en Fans

It Nearly Started A New Era For Michael Bay

Horsemen is the perfect replacement for fans of the David Fincher-directed thriller Se7en because the two films share strong similarities. Whereas Horsemen centers around a detective working on an investigation involving the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the detective in Se7en is investigating murders with eerie connections to the seven deadly sins.

The latter film stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Roundtree and John C. McGinley.

Horsemen almost started a new era for Bay. Development on the thriller began around 2002 and 2003, not long after the filmmaker created his production company Platinum Dunes with Fuller and Form. The first film that Platinum Dunes produced was the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Michael Bay followed that up with other horror projects like The Amityville Horror and Friday the 13th. While they did produce other genres, including thrillers, the reception to Horsemen appeared to lead Platinum Dunes to stick mostly to horror going forward.
