DC Debuts New Design For Batman's Best Modern Villain

One of Batman's most underrated villains gets his most dramatic redesign as DC reinvents his significance to Gotham lore. Batman's crusade against time in Gotham City in an incredibly adaptable concept. Writers and artists can transform the Caped Crusader and his expansive collection of villains and allies into medieval knights, Victorian detectives and criminals, vampires, or apocalyptic survivors, and yet they all continue to feel unmistakably like themselves. The Joker, the Robins, and Batman's rogues' gallery have more known multiversal counterparts than iconic figures like Green Lantern and Aquaman, and DC shows no signs of stopping this trend anytime soon.

The Absolute Universe has become a massive comic book phenomenon due to its harsh aesthetic that blends a hopeless society with exaggerated character redesigns and an almost oppressive sense of scale. Heroes and villains alike look physically powerful, scarred by experience, and shaped by more brutal lives than their mainstream counterparts. Due to the particular success of Absolute Batman, the introduction of A, B, and C-list Gotham characters with equally drastic redesigns in future issues seems like an inevitability.

Absolute Scarecrow has cemented himself as a nearly unstoppable threat due to his ability to mind-control any target without the need for fear toxins, and minor characters like Absolute Calendar Man, and Absolute Tweedledee and Tweedledum have recently made cameos that might be revisited later down the line. Now, it's an usually overlooked Gotham villain's turn to shine in the pages of Absolute Batman.

DC Unveils Absolute Batman's Design For Professor Pyg

At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, DC Comics has shared a first glimpse at the next classic Batman villain to enter the Absolute Universe. Absolute Batman: Beyond Ark M is set to explore Jack Grimm's other Arks, where Absolute Professor Pyg is in charge of conducting the same horrifying experiments that produced villains like Absolute Bane and Absolute Killer Croc. Pyg appears to be the Joker's right-hand man, a twisted criminal who understands exactly what Jack Grimm is looking for in his test subjects and exactly how to create nightmarish creatures capable of defeating Batman.

Absolute Professor Pyg's concept art shows him in a dark gray suit, with a black shirt and a red tie, instead of the white surgical apron his traditional counterpart usually wears. And instead of a realistic, oversized pink pig mask with white eyes, Absolute Professor Pyg wears a black mask with eyeholes that allow his real eyes to peek through. This version of the villain resembles Black Mask, who typically combines a similar style of headwear with stylish suits. A different concept art piece shown at San Diego Comic-Con features a different design, however, with a considerably shorter Professor Pyg who resembles an actual pig beneath the mask.

DC's Regular Professor Pyg Already Feels Like An Absolute Universe Character

Lazlo Valentin has built a reputation as one of Gotham's most disturbing criminals through Professor Pyg's grotesque Dollotron experiments and his deeply unsettling obsession with "perfection." For the Absolute Universe to push this concept even further, Absolute Professor Pyg needs to be more than an especially violent version of the character. Absolute Batman: Beyond Ark M adds Pyg's role as a mastermind pulling the strings alongside the Joker, which also serves as one of the biggest boosts in relevance Lazlo Valentin has received since his comic debut in 2007's Batman #666.

The same challenge applies to villains like Victor Zsasz, whose tally-mark murders have long symbolized Gotham's nihilism; as well as Doctor Death and his already nightmarish physical appearance, Mister Bloom and his unsettlingly colorful body horror, and Man-Bat, whose monstrous transformation makes him the closest thing to a horror movie monster among Batman's foes. Absolute Professor Pyg joins Absolute Universe's unbroken record of shocking Batman villain redesigns after the Joker, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Two-Face, the Penguin, and more recently Solomon Grundy in Absolute Green Arrow took terrifying villains and elevated them into living nightmares.
