The Witcher Returns in December 2026, Bringing Geralt Back to a Henry Cavill-Approved Era
If you're a fan of The Witcher, especially Henry Cavill's portrayal of Geralt, then you likely know the actor has repeatedly spoken about his deep appreciation for Andrzej Sapkowski's original novels. Cavill has long championed a faithful adaptation of the source material, making December 2026's upcoming Witcher release particularly exciting. Unlike some of the previous adaptations, this new project remains true to Sapkowski's vision of Geralt and the Witcher universe, making it exactly the kind of Witcher story Cavill has always advocated for.
While Cavill himself has never explicitly confirmed the reason for his departure, one leading theory behind the acclaimed actor leaving Netflix's The Witcher is creative differences between him and the show's writers. Cavill has long been outspoken about his love for Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher novels, repeatedly emphasizing that he wanted Netflix's adaptation to remain faithful to the source material.
One explicit example of Cavill expressing this preference came from The Witcher's YouTube channel in 2021, where he stated, “I’m a huge fan of the books and staying loyal to them, and it’s about making sure that story happens without too much in the way of diversions or side things going on to muddy the waters.”
As Netflix's The Witcher continued to stray further from the source material, many fans began to speculate that creative differences between Cavill and the writing team were the primary reason for his departure. Again, however, this has never been explicitly confirmed by either Netflix or Cavill. Instead, Cavill shared his official departure statement in an Instagram post, saying, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4…”
Whether there is any truth behind the leading theory surrounding Cavill's Witcher departure is ultimately for each fan to decide. However, there is one guarantee. As a self-proclaimed fan of the source material, Cavill would undoubtedly give Dark Horse Comics' upcoming Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher: The Last Wish - The Complete Collection HC his stamp of approval, as the new release is a proven faithful adaptation of Sapkowski's work.

Furthermore, fans can expect the deluxe collection to feature new cover art with foil stamping, silver foil-gilded edges, a cover gallery, a sketchbook section, a ribbon bookmark, and a foreword by internationally bestselling author Peter V. Brett (The Demon Cycle). So, if you’re like Henry Cavill and love The Witcher's source material, this is one release you won't want to miss.
Geralt is caught between violent feuds, beastly curses, and the confines of destiny in these tales of tragedy, passion, and bloodlust. Geralt sets out to claim a bounty on a bloodthirsty creature, but he is to cure the monstrosity, not slay it, for the creature is said to be retribution for the king’s dark secret. Next, Geralt encounters a beast with the faculties of man and discovers that within fairy tales, the truth is revealed.
Then, superstitions of an inborn evil pit a mage against a young woman, but with each committing acts of cruelty and carnage, who is the true evil? And fate plays a hand at a banquet to find a suitor for the princess when a mysterious guest ignites chaos within the royal family. In another story, Geralt and Dandelion search for a devil who they are to cast out, but not kill. Finally, witness Geralt and the sorceress Yennefer’s first encounter as they battle a djinn whose power lies beyond granting wishes.
