The Rookie Humbles ABC After Cancellation Snafu

Months after its cancellation scare, The Rookie effectively humbles ABC thanks to new data. The Nathan Fillion-led procedural has been a staple of network TV since 2018 and is now about to enter its ninth season. It's one of the longest-running shows on the Disney-owned network, following 9-1-1 and Grey's Anatomy, which are gearing up for its 10th and 23rd seasons, respectively, once ABC debuts its fall 2026 lineup.

For comparison, however, ABC took a long time to renew The Rookie compared to its peers. Grey's Anatomy season 23 was officially ordered on March 30, while 9-1-1 season 10 was greenlit earlier the same month, on March 5. Meanwhile, the network didn't confirm The Rookie season 9's return until April 13 — more than a month since it officially confirmed Ryan Murphy's procedural. The bulk of ABC's renewal actually went down in March, leaving both fans and those involved in the series at the edge of their seats, wondering if the Alexi Hawley-created project was going to be cancelled. New data, however, suggests that The Rookie didn't deserve to be subjected to that kind of stress.

The Rookie Punches Above Its Weight Per Streaming Data Of 2026 Thus Far

Per new data from Nielsen, covering January to June, The Rookie is one of the most-streamed shows of the year thus far, racking over 12.8 billion minutes on Hulu. This puts it at number 12 on the list, sandwiched between Criminal Minds on Hulu and Paramount+ and Landman on Paramount+. Interestingly, The Rookie has accumulated more streaming hours than legacy shows and fan-favorites, such as Law & Order: SVU on 14th spot with 11.952 billion minutes watched on Hulu and Peacock, followed by NCIS with 11.870 billion minutes on Hulu, Netflix, Paramount+, and Pluto TV.

The only ongoing network TV show above The Rookie is Grey's Anatomy, racking up to 20.404 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix. However, upon closer inspection, Fillion's procedural was watched more per episode, as its viewership numbers were only spread across 144 outings compared to 467 for the ABC medical drama. Beyond that, The Rookie was only available to stream on one platform, while Grey's Anatomy and every other ongoing network TV show on the list are accessible on at least two services. Considering all of this, The Rookie shouldn't have had to wait almost the last minute for its season 9 renewal — if anything, the decision should have been a no-brainer and announced at the earliest.

Despite having a titular character, The Rookie has become a true ensemble series, making it easier to sell it to the public. Of course, Fillion will always be the face of the show, and John Nolan will remain at the center of its storytelling, but by surrounding him with equally interesting characters, the show has prevented itself from being stale. It doesn't have to fully rely on him, so Hawley is able to move the story forward. As other characters get developed, fans are given more options in terms of who they want to be emotionally invested in. The Rookie season 8, for example, was a milestone year for Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen.

The Rookie offers different kinds of stories that can appeal to multi-generation fans. Nolan's story is one, but down the line, it features characters in various stages of their personal and professional lives. Miles Penn and Celina Juarez as their youngest members offers an entirely new perspective compared to say, Wade Grey, who had previously contemplated retirement. Overall, The Rookie has all the hallmarks of a good procedural show, but with a few tweaks in terms of ensemble composition and the kind of weekly cases it tackles, it's the perfect modern take on the format.
