It's Officially The Start Of An Era For HBO's House Of The Dragon Replacement
HBO's House of the Dragon replacement is already here and dominating streaming charts to start an exciting new era for the major franchise it is a part of. HBO's library of TV shows does include a lot of original series. The Sopranos, Succession, Chernobyl, The White Lotus, and many more help make HBO one of the best places for creative projects.
That said, HBO and HBO Max are home to quite a few major franchises. One of HBO's best shows, Game of Thrones, was based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books, with multiple spinoffs of the fantasy series having been released since it ended. Other franchise projects found on HBO and HBO Max include Dune: Prophecy, The Penguin, The Last of Us, and more.
However, it is true that the Game of Thrones universe has become intrinsically tied to HBO over the years. Recently, House of the Dragon season 3 dominated HBO's viewership numbers and HBO Max's global charts week after week as it aired new episodes. Then, House of the Dragon season 3 concluded on August 9, making way for its HBO replacement to take over.
House of the Dragon's replacement at HBO is Lanterns, the new live-action series set in James Gunn's DC Universe. Lanterns took over House of the Dragon season 3's Sunday, 9 PM ET/6 PM PT timeslot. While it had some major shoes to fill, the Green Lantern series has instantly managed to live up to the high expectations that came with replacing House of the Dragon.
Lanterns Replaces House Of The Dragon Successfully On HBO
At the time of writing, Lanterns is the 3rd most-watched TV show on HBO Max worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. The new DC series premiered on HBO and HBO Max on August 16. As such, it has become an instant global streaming sensation. Lanterns leaves behind popular shows like Rick and Morty and its new sci-fi spinoff, President Curtis, on HBO Max's global charts. Lanterns is also not the only DC series on the list, as the animated My Adventures with Superman is currently HBO's Max's 7th most-watched TV show worldwide. Lanterns is trending in 42 countries, ranking #1 in 21.
One of those countries is the United States, where it has managed to dethrone House of the Dragon, which just goes to show how Lanterns is the fantasy series' perfect replacement at HBO. That said, when it comes to the streaming service's global charts, House of the Dragon season 3 still rules supreme, at least for now, standing as HBO Max's most-watched series worldwide.
Still, Lanterns will likely take over the streamer's crown throughout its run. After all, the new HBO series airs episodes weekly, with seven more episodes left after its premiere. Lanterns' popularity will grow as House of the Dragon's falls as the distance from the season 3 finale's release increases.
Lanterns' New Era Leaves Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern In The Dust
Lanterns' new era is not only made of streaming success, but how viewers and critics view it in a completely different light to its live-action Green Lantern predecessor. While Nathan Fillion has played the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in multiple DCU releases, the last true live-action Green Lantern project was 2011's Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Not only was the DC movie a box office bomb, but the project was also met with overwhelmingly negative reception from critics and moviegoers alike. Green Lantern sits at a staggeringly low 25% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45% audience score.
HBO's Lanterns came out of the gate in a much better standing with both. On Rotten Tomatoes, Lanterns boasts a near-perfect 94% critics' score and an excellent 86% audience score, with fans having only watched episode 1 so far. As such, Lanterns starts a new era for DC's Green Lantern adaptations in the best way possible, proving itself vastly superior to the hero's latest live-action project and a worthy replacement for a massive hit like HBO's House of the Dragon.
