Reacher's New Spinoff Is Officially Honoring Series-Long Tradition With Neagley & More Returning Characters
Neagley will feature the return of one important Reacher tradition.
After debuting in Reacher season 1 back in 2022, Maria Sten is set to headline her very own Prime Video show in the form of the Neagley spinoff. The show, which premieres on September 16, follows the titular character as she works to unravel a mystery surrounding a sinister threat.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con, Sten reveals that the spinoff will continue the Reacher tradition of featuring a sinister act in the opening minutes. What follows, the actor explains, is Neagley and her team working to enact justice upon those responsible. Check out Sten's comment below:
As we started the show, we wanted to stay true to the tradition of Reacher. So usually there's something very bad that happens in the first 30 seconds of the show, and then we have to figure out how to make the bad people pay. In a way, it is the same sort of cold open and then we go right into the action with Neagley and maybe some other familiar faces.
Though Neagley is set to follow in Reacher's footsteps in some ways, it's also set to feature some key differences. It was recently revealed, for example, that the spinoff will feature a cast of supporting characters that are designed to return in subsequent seasons. Greyston Holt, Matthew Del Negro, Adeline Rudolph, John Bregar, Rebecca Liddiard, Ema Ines, and Lars A. Mebly are among those set to appear in season 1 alongside Sten.
Adopting certain Reacher traditions is likely a wise move for Neagley given the popularity of the flagship show for Prime Video. The series remains one of the most viewed original series for the streamer, and season 3 accumulated over 54 million views in its first 19 days of availability.
By striking the right balance between familiarity and freshness, Neagley could prove itself a worthy – and popular – addition to the Reacher franchise. It helps, too, that Alan Ritchson is confirmed to reprise his role as Jack Reacher for the upcoming spinoff.
Of course, one major departure that Neagley makes from Reacher is the fact that it isn't based on pre-existing source material. Reacher adapts the popular Lee Child novel series of the same name, but Neagley, which hails from creators Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, is telling an original story.
While many questions remain about how Neagley will fare with audiences, it's set to be a busy year for the larger Prime Video franchise. Reacher season 4 premieres on August 12, with the finale set to air the same day of Neagley's premiere.
Adapting the events of Child's Gone Tommorrow, Reacher season 4 follows Ritchson's eponymous hero as he finds himself wrapped up in a dangerous conspiracy after witnessing a woman's death on a New York City subway. The upcoming season will consist of eight episodes, the same number to be featured in Neagley.
Though Neagley hasn't yet been picked up for a second season, Reacher season 5 has already been given the green light. Season 5 will cover the events of Child's 20th Jack Reacher novel, Make Me. Though it's unclear if Neagley will be able to recapture the same magic that has made Reacher such an enduring success for Prime Video, the spinoff will clearly be taking after its predecessor in some compelling ways, which is a promising sign for the show's future.
