New Free-to-Play Pokémon Rival Aniimo Launches on PC and Consoles

Pawprint Studio’s free-to-play RPG combines open-world creature catching, real-time combat, transformations, and multiplayer, although its beta tests produced sharply divided impressions.

Pawprint Studio is preparing to launch Aniimo, its ambitious free-to-play creature-catching RPG, following three rounds of testing that left players impressed by its beautiful world and unusual mechanics but divided over its technical polish and familiar gacha progression.

Aniimo’s servers will open in the Americas on September 15 at 7 PM PT, corresponding with its official September 16 global launch. The game will be available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Versions for iOS and Android will follow on September 23, with progress shared between platforms when players remain on the same regional server.

The game takes players to Idyll, a large open world inhabited by creatures known as Aniimo. As Pathfinders, players can capture, train, evolve, and fight alongside these creatures, but Aniimo’s defining mechanic goes considerably further than traditional monster collecting.

Yes, it's very similar to other creature collection games like Pokémon, but with a few differences and nuances as well.

For example, Twining allows a Pathfinder to temporarily become an Aniimo, gaining access to its movement abilities, senses, attacks, and environmental interactions. Different creatures can therefore change how players traverse the world, approach real-time battles, solve puzzles, and interact with other Aniimo species.

That mechanic was central to Pawprint Studio’s vision when the project was first revealed. As the developers previously explained in interviews, the team wanted creatures to feel like inhabitants of an ecosystem rather than collectible units that simply waited for a battle. Aniimo have families, behaviors, relationships, preferred environments, and reactions to other species, encouraging players to observe them in the wild.

The launch version also contains several multiplayer systems. Players can explore Idyll and battle wild Aniimo together, join other Pathfinders against powerful Alpha creatures, spend time in shared social areas, and participate in activities including Operation: Egg Heist. Each player also receives a customizable RV and Home area featuring farming, construction, decorations, interactive furniture, and resident Aniimo.

These features produced some of the most encouraging responses during Aniimo’s closed tests. Players frequently praised the colorful environments, sense of scale, creature-catching mechanics, and the ability to explore alongside other people.

Aniimo’s multiplayer may be its most meaningful competitive advantage. Many contemporary free-to-play RPGs restrict co-op to a relatively small collection of activities, but Aniimo allows players to explore, fight creatures, and participate in its world together.

The recurring criticism from pre-launch impressions is that Aniimo combines ideas from Pokémon, Genshin Impact, Palworld, and The Legend of Zelda without always establishing a sufficiently clear identity of its own.

PC Gamer’s closed-beta assessment was particularly negative, criticizing its abundance of currencies, reward screens, upgrade systems, limited-time activities, and familiar free-to-play structure. They felt that the Twining system, creature interactions, and functional multiplayer were interesting, but those qualities were buried beneath conventions borrowed from other gacha RPGs.

The developer has acknowledged both the enthusiasm for the game and the frustration from the community. In an extensive pre-launch message, Pawprint detailed numerous changes made after reviewing feedback from all three tests.

One of the largest adjustments concerns the Legendary Aniimo Irisalis. Its original encounter required players to repeatedly complete a challenge and throw multiple Aniipods while relying heavily on chance. Testers described the process as repetitive and draining, prompting Pawprint to redesign it for launch.

Players will instead obtain Legendary Tokens through exploration and story progression, use them to craft a dedicated Legendary Aniipod, unlock Irisalis’ story, and complete one decisive encounter. Pawprint intends to use this structure as the template for future Legendary Aniimo.

The studio has also simplified creature progression by removing random rune slots and the rune system, increasing valuable upgrade materials, making certain investments refundable, and allowing inherited Aniimo to retain more previously acquired benefits. Spawn conditions for rare Prismana creatures have been clarified, while high-potential wild Aniimo should appear more frequently.

The Home system has expanded into a multi-area map with house construction, additional furniture, sharing codes, interactive objects, improved resident AI, and social farming interactions. Controller and mobile inputs have been revised, journey guidance has been rebuilt to address unclear requirements and progression blockers, and character models, NPCs, animation, facial expressions, localization, and voice acting have received further improvements.

Those changes show that Pawprint has responded directly to identifiable problems rather than treating its betas purely as promotional previews. It's a good start, at least.

The reaction ahead of release is consequently best described as cautiously optimistic. Aniimo has attracted an enthusiastic community that sees considerable potential in its creatures and world, but it's a matter of live service execution now. Pawprint has an opportunity to demonstrate how much it learned from those tests, and whether Aniimo can become more than the sum of its obvious inspirations.

Aniimo launches on September 16 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Its servers open in the Americas on September 15 at 7 PM PT, while the mobile edition arrives on September 23.
