Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis gets new details ahead of February launch, including OG easter egg

A new teaser for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has been shared by Crystal Dynamics, with a reference to an easter egg from the original game included.

The new trailer for Legacy of Atlantis was posted onto the Tomb Raider social channels over the weekend at the TR30 Tomb Raider Day in Derby, UK.

It shows off some of the locations that will appear in the upcoming remake of the first game, including Peru, Greece, and Egypt.

Flashes of different puzzles, action, and exploration sequences are shown in quick succession. If you're a fan of the series, there are plenty of images and references here that you'll recognise.

One particular reference that is sure to excite fans is confirmation that Legacy of Atlantis will feature the Golden Lara easter egg from the first game.

For those unaware, the Golden Lara easter egg is a hidden secret in the original Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Anniversary. In the Temple of Midas, players could find a room off the beaten path which houses a large stone hand, which belongs to that of King Midas.

As you may know, in Greek mythology, King Midas had the ability to turn to objects into gold with his hands, which is what the easter egg is a reference to.

Climbing onto this hand would trigger a cutscene where Lara dies by being turned into a gold statue, resulting in a game over.

Although the upcoming remake appears to be making some liberties with the gameplay and presentation, it seems that it'll stay pretty close to the original game and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. We can only hope that Skater Boy makes his grand return.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 12, 2027.

Tomb Raider is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the Tomb Raider franchise, which debuted back in October 1996.

As well as the teaser for Legacy of Atlantis, Crystal Dynamics has also released the Tomb Raider: 30th Anniversary Lo-Fi Collection, featuring a collection of tracks that reimagine and remix music from the games in a cosy lo-fi style. It's made in collaboration with musician That Norsk Chick, and is available now for free on YouTube, with further releases on Spotify and other streaming platforms coming soon.

Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider franchise also sees two new releases this year for the 30th anniversary in the form of two books: Chronicles of the Tomb Raider by Alex Forbes-Calvin, which delves into the lore, settings, and history of each game, and The Making of Tomb Raider: 1997-2000 by Daryl Baxter, a sequel to Baxter's previous book which tells the story of Core Design during the development of Tomb Raider 3, The Last Revelation, and Chronicles, and the challenges the studio faced as the series exploded in popularity.
