Kaley Cuoco's new HBO series, How To Survive Without Me, may survive to see a series pickup after winning over the studio.
After starring as Penny in the popular CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019), Cuoco has continued to have a successful career on television, starring in HBO Max's The Flight Attendant (2020–2022), which earned her two consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Peacock's Based on a True Story (2023–2024), both of which ended prematurely after two seasons. Now, Cuoco's new HBO series is poised for pickup.
According to Deadline, How To Survive Without Me has been generating positive buzz and is reportedly in a strong position to receive a series pickup. However, there is still no official update on the streamer's pilot, described as a family drama from Warner Bros. Television.
Meanwhile, HBO Max has passed on its other drama pilot, American Blue, which stars Milo Ventimiglia. Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the project, is now exploring other potential buyers and is looking for a new home for the series.
Both projects were developed using the model pioneered by HBO Max's Emmy-winning sensation, The Pitt, featuring 15-plus episodes per season, a relatively modest budget, and an annual release schedule. This format could make American Blue a potential fit for both traditional networks and streaming platforms.
