A 1999 PlayStation 1 RPG Masterpiece Is Free On PS Plus Right Now
PlayStation Plus is always adding and removing games from its service, but there's one RPG from the PS1 era that's definitely worth checking out right now. If you've got PS Plus Extra, then you can play The Legend of Dragoon at no additional cost. It's one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and the current version that's available is upscaled with trophies, making it more accessible than it's been for quite some time.
The game, which follows a young warrior named Dart, sees the cast of characters fighting to end a civil war and then reviving the Dragoon Knights to face off against unknown forces. There are elves and giants, dragons and princesses, and even robots who love bureaucracy. Basically, anything you could ask for in a fantasy RPG. It also takes around 40 hours to beat—more, if you do side content—so The Legend of Dragoon is really something you can sink your teeth into.
This PlayStation Plus Freebie Is A Classic
The Legend of Dragoon is a classic that's sadly never gotten a true remaster or remake. The upscaled version with trophies on PS5 is a great way to play it, though, and while it's free on PS Plus, it's definitely worth trying. The turn-based combat has timed button presses, offering a kind of unique gameplay mechanic. Factor in that characters can turn into Dragoons with special abilities, and you're in for some truly memorable boss fights.
The cast of characters is also pretty enjoyable, offering up an admittedly archetypal assembly of party members. If you've played the PS1-era Final Fantasy games, then you'll also notice some similar story elements. Cinematic cutscenes were especially good for that time, and even featured voice acting, which made The Legend of Dragoon impressive from a technical standpoint. This game currently has a 4.86/5 rating on the PlayStation Store, which shows you just how highly-rated this RPG is.
27 Years Later, Is The Legend Of Dragoon Worth Your Time?
I've long been a proponent of The Legend of Dragoon getting a remaster or remake. I even wrote an article about it on one of my first days at ScreenRant six years ago. It's been 27 years since the RPG first launched in Japan (26 since its North American release), and The Legend of Dragoon remains one of my all-time favorite PS1 games. I've replayed it countless times, and most recently got the Platinum Trophy on the PS5 version last year.
So, yes, I'm going to say The Legend of Dragoon is worth your time. It's definitely worth buying for $9.99, but if you have PS Plus Extra already, then you can play it at no extra cost. The Legend of Dragoon is one of my favorite RPGs, and while it's free with PlayStation Plus, consider giving it a try. And if you played it back in 2000, then it's well worth playing again in 2026.
