Halo: Campaign Evolved mod turns most annoying NPC into a killable Grunt, and it's hilarious

Quite possibly, the most unlikeable and annoying NPC in the history of Halo is now a killable Grunt thanks to this hilarious mod.

The moment Halo: Combat Evolved launched as an original Xbox launch title in November 2001, the franchise starring Master Chief, aka John-117, became one of the most important video game properties of all time and is still going 25 years later.

Whether it’s still going strong is subjective, and many would most likely agree that the series hasn't quite been the same since the departure of Bungie, with the series now in the hands of Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries), and whatever outsourced studio has been hired at the time.

The most recent entry in the series is Halo: Campaign Evolved, a full remake of the original built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. For better or worse, it’s a very faithful remake and is a fresh experience for new and returning fans alike to play the beloved classic on modern systems.

Halo: Campaign Evolved has three new prequel missions

The three ‘Operation: Meteorite’ prequel missions take place roughly a year before the events of the main game, and star a playable Sgt. Major Avery Johnson, alongside Master Chief.

For the most part, while they don’t add all that much to the Halo lore, they are fun to play. Well, apart from the missions that include the annoying and insufferable NPC, First Lieutenant Williams.

We get it, most Shock Troopers in Halo do not like Spartans, but my god, Lieutenant Williams's continuous jabs at Master Chief (the soldier who’s saving her and the squad's ass) get tedious very quickly. It almost feels like much of the prequel stories are about Master Chief winning over this loreless NPC.

Unfortunately, players have to put up with Lieutenant Williams for the vast majority of the prequel missions, but if you’re a PC gamer, you can get rid of her once and for all, courtesy of ‘The Williams Project’ mod.

“Replaces every Grunt in the campaign with Lieutenant Williams as a hostile enemy who can fight, take damage, and die,” reads the description of the mod on Nexusmods, created by Omniscye.

Sadly, as is the nature of most mods, ‘The Williams Project’ is a PC deal only and is not available on consoles.

There is a way for console gamers to get rid of Lieutenant Williams

While this is by no means a permanent change, as there’s every chance she will respawn at certain points, I’ve seen a video across social media that shows how you can get rid of Lieutenant Williams by using in-game mechanics.

When you meet Lieutenant Williams during the opening moments of ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ mission, you will be outside, admiring a beautiful vista somewhat reminiscent of the Grand Canyon.

If you punch Williams so that she moves to the edge of a cliff, and then stick her with a Plasma Grenade, with a bit of luck, it will send her lying away, and hopefully, she won’t bother you again until she needs to respawn for key moments. Though the developers will likely patch this out at some point.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
