Everyone's Official Starfleet Rank In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns for season 4 with a full crew complement aboard the USS Enterprise. Premiering Thursday, July 23, on Paramount+, season 4 will be the last season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to consist of 10 episodes. Expected in 2027, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fifth and final season will only be 6 episodes.
In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, the USS Enterprise crew refocuses on space exploration in the vein of the classic Star Trek of the 1960s. However, there will still be "big swings" in season 4, like Star Trek's first-ever (and already controversial) puppet episode. Captain Pike and his crew will also enjoy more character development as the prequel begins to bridge to Star Trek: The Original Series.
Of course, the crew of the Starship Enterprise are all Starfleet Officers, and most of their ranks have been fixed throughout the series. A couple of characters received promotions during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but as a primer for who serves in which division and who outranks who, here is every Star Trek: Strange New Worlds character's Starfleet rank in season 4:
12 James T. Kirk - Lt. Commander, First Officer, USS Farragut
James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is a Lieutenant Commander in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and he is the First Officer of the USS Farragut. Kirk was introduced as a Lieutenant in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, and he was promoted to the Farragut's Number One in season 2.
Of course, Kirk is destined to become Captain of the Enterprise, which is going to happen at the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in season 5. Alternate reality Captain Kirks also appeared in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale and season 2's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow."
11 Nyota Uhura - Ensign, Communications Officer
Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) is an Ensign in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. Uhura has served on the USS Enterprise's bridge as Communications Officer since season 2, and she is the youngest and lowest-ranked of Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) senior staff.
Uhura came aboard the USS Enterprise as a Starfleet Academy cadet, and she was promoted to Ensign after floating around different divisions like Engineering, where she was mentored by the late former Chief Engineer, Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak).
10 George Samuel Kirk - Lieutenant, Xenobiology and Life Sciences
George Samuel "Everyone calls him Sam" Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) is a Lieutenant in the Life Sciences division, with a specialty in xenobiology. This makes Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) the affable, mustachioed elder Kirk brother's senior officer.
Sam's Starfleet career path often makes him feel inferior to little brother James, whose meteoric rise up the command ladder reflects their father, Lieutenant George Kirk.
9 Montgomery Scott - Lieutenant, Engineering
Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (Martin Quinn) is a Lieutenant in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Of course, Scotty is an engineer, but the young genius is years away from his destiny of becoming Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise. Previously, Scotty served on the USS Stardiver, and he was a student of Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) at Starfleet Academy.
8 Erica Ortegas - Lieutenant, Senior Helmsman
Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) is a Lieutenant and famously "flies the ship." Ortegas is the Senior Helmsman of the USS Enterprise. While other officers fly the starship in different shifts, Erica is the Enterprise's lead pilot and top gun. Lt. Ortegas is also a veteran of the Klingon War of 2256-2257 seen in Star Trek: Discovery.
7 La’an Noonien-Singh - Lieutenant, Chief Of Security
La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) is a Lieutenant and the Chief of Security of the USS Enterprise. La'an took over the Security Chief job when Captain Christopher Pike invited her to join the Enterprise crew in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' series premiere.
6 Spock - Lieutenant, Chief Science Officer
Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck) is, surprisingly, still only a Lieutenant in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. However, the (half) Vulcan is Chief Science Officer in charge of the USS Enterprise's Life Sciences division.
Spock's Lieutenant rank doesn't prevent him from nominally serving as the USS Enterprise's second officer. Spock often seems to outrank his fellow crewmates and holds a senior command position.
5 Christine Chapel - Lt. Commander, Nurse
Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) is a Nurse in Sickbay. Surprisingly, however, Chapel joined the USS Enterprise with a Lieutenant Commander rank, although Christine doesn't exercise command authority in most circumstances.
There are other nurses and medics in the USS Enterprise's sickbay, but Nurse Chapel seems to hold a senior position. Chapel is also a veteran of the Klingon War of 2256-2257, which is likely where her rank derives from.
4 Dr. Joseph M’Benga - Commander, Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) is the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise. M'Benga holds the rank of Commander. An old friend of Captain Pike's, M'Benga was a veteran of the Klingon War of 2256-2257, where he performed secret black ops assassinations as 'The Ghost.'
As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. M'Benga is in charge of the USS Enterprise's sickbay, and he has the authority to override and even order Captain Pike to step down from command for medical reasons.
3 Pelia - Commander, Chief Engineer
A five-thousand-year-old Lanthanite, Pelia is a Commander and serves as the Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, replacing the late Lt. Hemmer. Previously, Pelia was an instructor at Starfleet Academy. Pelia conducted inspections of the Enterprise when she finagled her way to the Chief Engineer position in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's premiere.
