Every Cyclops Actor In Live-Action Marvel Movies

Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, is one of the biggest X-Men characters, and he's had a notable history of appearances in Marvel movies, allowing several actors to play the powerful mutant, including in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given his standing as a founding member of the X-Men and a prominent leader of the team, Cyclops is one of Marvel Comics' greatest superheroes.

With decades of stories under his belt on the page, it has only ever made sense to include him in the biggest X-Men storytelling that hits the big screen. Whether he's been justice throughout the various portrayals is up for debate, but various iterations of Cyclops have irrefutably received key roles in Marvel movies that have explored everything from his origin, recruitment to the X-Men, and working as a main member.

Cyclops' power comes from his optic beams, which allow him to shoot powerful blasts of energy from his eyes. Due to his romance with Jean Grey and his familial ties to other mutants, like Cable, his impact on the X-Men mythos runs deep. His importance to the X-Men in movies will continue as Cyclops joins the MCU in a few different ways.

The biggest comes with the MCU's X-Men reboot, which gives a new actor the chance to play Cyclops. The role has gone to several actors over the years, especially when animated shows like X-Men '97 are factored in. But the list of live-action Cyclops actors in Marvel movies is now up to four after the MCU's Scott Summers casting news.

4 James Marsden

James Marsden holds the honor of being the first person to play Cyclops in a live-action Marvel movie. He made his debut in 2000's X-Men and returned for the two sequels, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. Marsden also got a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past as part of a reset franchise timeline. That looked to be his final appearance as the mutant forever, but Marvel Studios changed that by bringing him back for Avengers: Doomsday.

Cyclops' journey throughout these five Marvel movie appearances is filled with highs and lows. He was caught in a love triangle with Jean Grey and Wolverine for much of the original trilogy, leading to his controversial death in X-Men: The Last Stand. The scripts often reduced Cyclops' role within the team, limiting what Marsden could do to truly shine in the part. Doomsday looks to be a shot at redemption to some degree, putting Marsden in Cyclops' comic-accurate costume and emphasizing his leadership qualities.

While Marsden had several credits before landing this role, X-Men was a true breakout for him. He'd go on to net roles in The Notebook, Superman Returns, Enchanted, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Cyclops remains the biggest role of his career, even as his time wearing the visor comes to a close.

3 Tim Pocock

After Marsden's initial run as Cyclops came to a close with The Last Stand, Fox needed to recast Scott for a small appearance in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He is featured in the movie as a target of William Stryker and is eventually imprisoned with other mutants for experimentation. The movie shows Scott trying to escape from Sabretooth and befriending the first live-action Emma Frost as they find safety with Professor X.

Pocock made his acting debut with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, making the role of Cyclops even more meaningful for him. The Australian actor has since appeared in several Australian films. He even landed another Marvel role years later, playing a young Victor Stein in Hulu's Runaways. However, Pocock never returned as Cyclops, with the direction of the Fox X-Men franchise necessitating another recast a few years later.

2 Tye Sheridan

X-Men: Days of Future Past gave the X-Men franchise a reset in the past and future, and this allowed Fox to bring in a young Cyclops for the sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse. The movie explains that Scott gets his powers in 1983 and shortly thereafter is brought by his brother, Alex Summers aka Havok, to meet Professor X. Scott goes on to become a member of the X-Men and fight Apocalypse.

His journey continued in 2019's Dark Phoenix, which is set nearly a decade later. He had moved up to be a leader of the X-Men by then, and his and Jean's relationship had grown to a true romance. This made Scott one of the few mutants who believe Jean is not totally lost to the Phoenix Force and fight to get her help.

Looking for a younger versions of Scott, Apocalypse cast Tye Sheridan to play the part. It marked his first major blockbuster role after turning heads for his early roles in The Tree of Life and Mud. Sheridan would go on to get the lead role in Ready Player One after his Cyclops debut. The actor did also make a third appearance as Scott Summers thanks to a cameo in Deadpool 2.

1 Kit Connor

While Marsden gets the credit of playing the first Cyclops in an MCU movie, he's not sticking around in the role long-term. Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is bringing a whole new collection of talent together to breathe new life into the iconic characters. This includes Kit Connor, who is onboard as Cyclops as part of the MCU's X-Men movie cast.

Connor is best known for his role in Netflix's hit series Heartstopper and the movie conclusion, Heartstopper Forever. His credits go back much further then those, even if he's only 22 years old. He was also in Ready Player One as a small character, appeared in Rocketman, and A24's war movie Warfare. Connor also has done voice roles in His Dark Materials and The Wild Robot.

The previous three actors have already made their debuts as Cyclops, but Connor will have to wait until 2028, presumably. That is when the MCU's X-Men movie is expected to be released. Barring a surprise appearance in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, that ensemble film will be where Marvel Studios introduces audiences to this fresh version of Cyclops.
