10 Absolute Worst Devil Fruits In One Piece

One Piece is a pirate story first and foremost, as it follows main protagonist Monkey D. Luffy embarking on a quest with his crew to discover the title treasure left by the late Gol D. Roger and become the new King of the Pirates. One of the things that makes Eiichiro Oda epic saga appealing to so many people around the world for nearly 30 years is Devil Fruits. Eating one of these fruits grants a person incredible powers, though it comes at the cost of losing the ability to swim.
Most of the Devil Fruits (which are classified as either Paramecia, Zoan, or Logia types) shown in the One Piece manga and anime are appealing in some form or fashion. Plenty of them provide more straightforward powers, like the Riki Riki no Mi (Strong-Strong Fruit), which enhances the user’s strength. Others have more unique properties, like the Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow Fruit), which allows the user to conjure ghosts that can phase through walls, explode, and drain a person’s willpower.
However, there are a select number of Devil Fruits in One Piece that rank as the absolute worst. Sometimes this is because the ability the user gains is next to useless or only useful in extremely specific circumstances. Other times, the ability granted is more trouble than it’s worth, is difficult to live with, or it's just too bizarre and uncomfortable to witness. Whatever the specific reason, the One Piece characters who ate the following Devil Fruits hit the bottom of the barrel.
10 Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit)
Tony Tony Chopper was fortunate when he ate the Human-Human Fruit, as his intelligence was increased, and he gained the ability to transform into a human-like form or a reindeer/human hybrid. However, humans in the One Piece universe should avoid this Devil Fruit at all costs, as eating it would simply make them more… human. It’s unclear what exactly that would look like, but it’s not worth the cost of no longer being able to swim. Besides, most of Chopper’s cool abilities originate from the Rumble Balls he created.
9 Fuku Fuku no Mi (Garb-Garb Fruit)
Most of the Devil Fruits in One Piece have either offensive or defensive capabilities. The Garb-Garb Fruit falls into neither category. By eating it, Kin’emon can create clothing and other apparel out of leaves and stones. Although this power is useful if someone’s in need of a change of clothes or a disguise, it’s useless for combat. It’s also not ideal that it’s unusable if there aren’t any leaves or stones around. Furthermore, the clothes aren’t permanent, as they disappear once the person wearing them takes them off.
8 Sara Sara no Mi (Sala-Sala Fruit), Model: Axolotl
During the Punk Hazard arc, Caesar Clown fed the Sala-Sala Fruit, Model: Axolotl to Smiley, his living slime pet. On the one hand, eating this Devil Fruit provides the user with incredible healing abilities. On the other hand, the ability to breathe underwater because axolotls are amphibious is ultimately rendered pointless. Any living being that eats this Devil Fruit still loses the ability to swim. So, if they fall into the ocean, they’ll live, but remain trapped at the bottom and sapped of their power.
7 Woshu Woshu no Mi (Wash-Wash Fruit)
Marine Vice Admiral Tsuru has mostly sat on the sidelines during One Piece, usually engaged in conversation with fellow officers like Sengoku and Garp. However, there was one point during the Marineford arc when she dispatched some pirates with her unsettling Wash-Wash Fruit powers. Not only do they let her literally wash and hang opponents out to dry like they’re laundry, those who go through this process have some of the evil in their hearts “washed” out. While Tsuru finds these powers useful, watching them in action is too weird.
6 Muchi Muchi no Mi (Whip-Whip Fruit)
With the power of the Whip-Whip Fruit, Marine Rear Admiral Kujaku, who’s also Tsuru’s granddaughter, can use a whip to make any living being or inanimate object obey her. The latter was demonstrated when she forced some buildings to move around during the operation to rescue Koby from Pirate Island. The main problem with this power is it requires a whip to work, so if Kujaku loses her weapon, she’s another ordinary Marine who can’t swim. Also, making someone obey her will inevitably cause them harm since they have to be struck.
5 Nori Nori no Mi (Ride-Ride Fruit)
Marine Vice Admiral Bluegrass ate the Ride-Ride Fruit, enabling her to control anything she’s riding on. While this came in handy when she took command of a hacked Pacifista’s during One Piece's Egghead arc, this power doesn’t come with a lot of upsides. Bluegrass can only control one object at a time since she has to be physically riding them, and she’s still vulnerable to attacks regardless. Also, the thought of her exerting this kind of control on an intelligent being is horrifying.
4 Gocha Gocha no Mi (Pile-Pile Fruit)
Charlotte Newshi can merge himself with other people thanks to eating the Pile-Pile Fruit. The first problem with this power is that if the user is alone, it’s useless. Second, if there isn’t around anyone who’s strong, then merging won’t make much of a difference. Third, it’s unclear if merging requires consent from those being targeted or if he can force them to merge. Finally, there’s the mystery of what would happen if the user merged with another Devil Fruit user since, except for Blackbeard, no individual has successfully wielded two Devil Fruit powers at the same time.
3 Baku Baku no Mi (Munch-Munch Fruit)
On the surface, the Munch-Munch Fruit is just one of the weirder Devil Fruits. It enables its user, which is currently Wapol, to eat anything, as well as absorb the properties, even another living being. The problem is that eating this fruit curses the user with an insatiable hunger. So, Wapol will never know what it’s like to have a full stomach again. Gaining a freakish power like that is not worth a person having this uncomfortable and agonizing feeling for the rest of their life.
2 Beta Beta no Mi (Sticky-Sticky Fruit)
Admittedly, Trebol was a formidable enemy during One Piece’s Dressrosa arc using the powers he gained from the Sticky-Sticky Fruit. He can produce unlimited amounts of mucus from his body, then in turn use the substance to adhere to surfaces and weaponize in various ways. So, while it makes sense why Trebol is one of the Donquixote Pirates’ top three officers, that doesn’t excuse how disgusting and horrid it is to see this power used. If there’s a way to permanently destroy a Devil Fruit, it should be used on this one.
1 Jake Jake no Mi (Jacket-Jacket Fruit)
With the Jacket-Jacket Fruit, the user can become a living jacket, meaning they can control the body of anyone who wears them and utilize the wearer’s abilities. Kelly Funk showed off this power when he had his brother Bobby wear him while fighting in the Corrida Colosseum. Putting aside this example of pure body horror in One Piece, the only way this power can be effective is if the user knows someone else who’s powerful, and said person is agreeable to putting them on and relinquishing control of their body.
