Quad Remesher for Hard-Surface & Organic Blender Models

Check out this user-friendly retopology add-on for easy and painless polygon count reduction from Milad Kambari.

Smart Remesh 3 is a retopology add-on that works for hard-surface and organic Blender models. The tool was created by Milad Kambari to fix the issue of polygon-heavy models that have hundreds of thousands to millions of triangles in their mesh. Smart Remesh reconstructs flat panels as clean n-gons, getting rid of the edge loops that carry no shape.

What makes Smart Remesh 3 unique is that, unlike auto-remeshers that can't guarantee the desired poly count after retopologizing, you can control the face count with this add-on. While it still does not guarantee an exact match to your target number of polygons, by using Manual mode, you can ensure your final face count is close to what you need: if you type in 20,000, there will be around 20,000 faces.

Smart Remesh 3 is smarter and faster compared to the previous version of the add-on. Firstly, when run on clothes, the add-on remeshes each UV panel of a garment separately, leaving the seams untouched. Smart Remesh features smart cleanup to remove extra loops without touching any marked edges. With Rebuild Flat, you can turn fans and diagonals into single faces, and with 3 edges, you can get rid of stray points in the mesh.

Plus, the add-on allows you to build a light all-quad cage over the entire model to crease any hard edges and add a Subdivision Surface modifier. With every Smart Remesh 3 task you start, you'll see a live progress bar. If you decide to stop the process, you can always press Esc or click Back to Original to restore the source version at any point.

The most heartwarming feature, especially for those who are still new to 3D modeling, is the animated explainers that appear once you hover over each setting. They show what that setting will do to a mesh before you go on to click it. Plus, each section of the add-on has a play button that will open a video lesson right inside Blender in case you feel lost.

You can get the add-on Superhive and try it out yourself.
