Disney Just Declared Star Wars Is Officially Back — Gaming

Star Wars is preparing a major cinematic comeback next year, and Disney basically just confirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter will be the true return of the franchise we've been waiting for (albeit with a surprising announcement).

Since 2019, with the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Disney and Lucasfilm's efforts have primarily been on the small screen, with live-action series and animated projects on Disney+, including beloved shows like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor. While 2026 saw Lucasfilm's return to the big screen with Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and Grogu, the true franchise revival is expected to come in 2027 with Star Wars: Starfighter.

Kicking off a fresh Star Wars era featuring all-new characters, there are already a lot of eyes on Starfighter before even a trailer has been released. That said, a brand-new announcement from Marvel Studios has remarkably proven the level of confidence Lucasfilm and Disney seem to have in 2027's Starfighter.

Marvel Studios officially confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that Ryan Gosling will finally play Ghost Rider in a brand-new MCU movie arriving in 2028. According to news and interviews at SDCC, the new MCU movie reportedly came together after Gosling personally pitched his vision for Ghost Rider to Marvel Studios. For years, the actor has cited Ghost Rider as the one superhero he'd love to play, and large portions of the internet have supported that dream, which is finally manifesting in 2028.

Additionally, the movie will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy with a script from Jonathan Tropper. All things considered, this is quite remarkable, seeing as how all three creatives have already worked together on Star Wars: Starfighter for Lucasfilm, releasing next year.

While details are still slim, we do know that Star Wars: Starfighter will be charting new territory with an original story set five years after the events of Rise of Skywalker, featuring entirely new heroes and expanding the future of the franchise in a brand-new era with Ryan Gosling's character reportedly protecting a young boy from dark forces.

Even before any official footage or a trailer, Disney and Marvel Studios' latest move arguably says plenty about what's to come in Starfighter and its overall quality. Because the same creative team has been approved for a movie releasing immediately afterward the following year, one has to imagine that the confidence behind Starfighter is likely quite large, just under a year out from its release.

Looking at it from that lens, the new Ghost Rider announcement says just as much about Star Wars as it does Marvel Studios' future, with each major Disney franchise getting its fair share of Gosling on-screen (which isn't a bad thing in the slightest).

Iron Man (2008) is, in retrospect, the most consequential casting decision in modern blockbuster history — but at the time Marvel Studios and parent company Paramount were openly hostile to director Jon Favreau’s push for the lead actor he eventually got. ✓ Correct! A worthy Avenger — or dusted in the snap?

Overall, the idea that Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be feeling good about Starfighter is quite encouraging. After the divisive release of 2019's Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm definitely played it safe this year with The Mandalorian & Grogu as the first release back on the big screen, relying on established and beloved characters like Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin and Grogu. Now, the true test will be Starfighter, which certainly has a fair amount of pressure behind it. After all, it needs to prove the franchise can survive without the Skywalker saga.

With an original cast and an unexplored era of the timeline, it's definitely one of Lucasfilm's boldest gambles, so it's nice to see some potential evidence that Disney's feeling good about it. After all, it's hard to imagine doubling down and entrusting the same creative team with a high-profile Marvel project so soon if there were any big question marks about how it will be received. As such, the brand-new Ghost Rider announcement really does feel like a strong vote of confidence in Starfighter's favor.
