52 Episodes Later, Colter Shaw's Best Line Is Still The Greatest Quote In Tracker History

Tracker has become one of CBS' biggest hits since its 2024 debut, and with Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) delivering iconic lines every episode, it's surprising to see that his was just a few episodes into the series. A procedural that follows Colter as he tracks down missing people, the CBS series was quick to become a massive success based on a formula that feels fresh week-to-week. Colter, who rarely stays in the same place for long, typically operates out of his airstream as a home base, getting information from his team and running interference with his lawyer, Reenie (Fiona Rene).

While Colter is a quiet and cynical character, his intense level of survivalist skills and level of heart endeared him to Tracker's audience right away. As a man of few words, Colter doesn't always have a lot to say when it comes to the lives he's saved. Moving from case to case and town to town, he comes in contact with a lot of people who can lend a helping hand, but he has to work around the law in order to help those who are in need. Regardless, Colter's sense of humor and charm leaves people happy to help.

Despite Tracker only moving into its fourth season, the series has seen Colter deliver quite a few character-defining speeches and fun one-liners that have stuck with its viewers. Colter's best quote, however, comes from one of the earliest episodes of Tracker and makes his entire personality clear in simple terms.

One Of Tracker's Earliest Episodes Sees Colter Distill His Character Down To A Few Words

Although Colter's job has taken him far and wide, one of his earliest cases sees him headed to a little town in Idaho to help a woman try to locate her long-missing sister. As Colter works through the case, giving Kira Stine (Anja Savcic) a caveat that because her sister, Mia, has been missing for such a long time that things may not work out in her favor, he keeps hitting dead ends that don't make him optimistic for his client's overall outcome. Eventually, he comes to find that Mia is dead, but her death helps uncover a darker secret.

While Colter explains what he's discovered to Kira, she asks him about the sense of regret she's feeling surrounding not looking for her sister sooner or telling her she loved her more regularly. When Kira asks Colter if the sense of regret will ever go away, his blunt response distills both his ideology and experiences down to a single line. Colter explains that though her regret won't dissipate, even with time, "you learn to keep it with you as a reminder of what that person meant to you. Good, bad, it doesn't matter. They helped make you."

In sharing with Kira that her feelings won't shrink, but will repurpose themselves into something that becomes a fundamental part of who she is, Colter made it clear that he had personal experience with the level of grief that Kira was dealing with. Not only did it dig into what Colter's been through in his life, the quote revealed more about who Colter is as a person as Tracker began to delve into what he'd dealt with after his father's mysterious passing. Both helpful and telling, Colter's philosophy was an entry point to his character at an early on-screen moment.

Tracker Season 4 Has The Chance To Top Colter's Best Quote

Colter in Tracker

Although Tracker's first three seasons have had some tremendous moments for Colter, including some moments that have resulted in series-defining quotes, the upcoming season of the series could be its best yet. While Tracker season 4 is going to switch things up for the series in an interesting way, the highly-anticipated series' return is bringing the show into a whole new era. With Tracker moving production from Vancouver to Los Angeles, the feel of the series may be a bit different in its next iteration, but the story is what viewers will be focused on after Tracker season 3's end.

As Colter moves into a phase of his life where he's going to have genuine clarity for the first time, he may look slightly different as he dives back into work. While Tracker is always going to be about Colter roving around to help locate missing people, the show's vantage point may change as Colter understands more about his past, and the new mysteries he uncovers with that knowledge could shape him in unexpected ways. With different pieces of his past coming up, Colter's best line on Tracker may change as the seasons continue to pile up year after year.
