Henry Cavill Thriller In Streaming Top 10 Proves He's Guy Ritchie's Jason Statham Replacement

The streaming success of the latest Guy Ritchie action thriller confirms that, yes, Henry Cavill has replaced Jason Statham as his go-to leading man. All three of Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie's movies thus far have been stylish, action-packed spy capers. With his latest outing, In The Grey, it feels like Ritchie has completed an unofficial James Bond trilogy with his star.

The British actor was famously the runner-up for Casino Royale, and lost out because producers felt that, at 22 years old, Cavill was just too young. The possibility of becoming James Bond has lingered over Cavill's career for the past two decades, and he and Ritchie have smartly weaponized that. Their Man from U.N.C.L.E. reboot is about as close to playing 007 as Cavill will likely come, while The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and In the Grey both have distinct Bondian sheens.

In the Grey was delayed for years, and was released in early 2026 to indifferent reviews and box office. Despite that, the movie landed in the top ten on Amazon recently (via FlixPatrol), and like much of Ritchie's recent output, has found a second life on streaming. Of course, nothing can replace a strong theatrical performance, but at least the latest Cavill/Ritchie collaboration has found a willing audience.

In The Grey Is Another Strong Henry Cavill & Guy Ritchie Team-Up

Despite In the Grey's tepid reviews (it sits at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes currently), the film is a real blast. It's a glossy, slick actioner where very, very attractive people (including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rosamund Pike and Eiza Gonzalez) trade quips with each other in exotic locales. Ritchie has really come into his own as an action director too, so it also features some great setpieces.

If the movie has an issue, and the reviews were quick to underline this, it's that it is quite disposable stuff. In the Grey is a movie almost designed to be viewed on a rainy weekday night, deliver some laughs and thrills, and then never be watched again. Of the Ritchie/Cavill trilogy, it is the weakest - but that doesn't mean it's not a fun ride while it lasts.

Cavill & Ritchie Should Revisit Their First Movie Together

On the one hand, it would be nice to see Ritchie and Cavill try an entirely different genre next, like a comedy or even a drama. Between his Guy Ritchie outings and the likes of Argylle, Cavill has dipped his toes into the espionage genre many times over the years. That said, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was such a fun, throwback romp that it would be lovely to see the duo revisit the franchise.

The movie featured one of Cavill's best lead performances, and the part of American spy Napoleon Solo suited him like... well, a very nice suit. A follow-up would obviously need to face its Armie Hammer-shaped problem up front, and while their chemistry was a key part of what made The Man From U.N.C.L.E. such good fun, it would be wise to either recast Hammer's role or create a new partner for Solo.

Moving the action to the 1970s would give a sequel a different flavor too. Fun as a new Man From U.N.C.L.E. would be, it's still unlikely. The original just wasn't a hit, and while it found a loyal audience after it left theaters, it feels like more of a cult item now. An alternate route the property could take would be to come full circle and make a Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series. Given how well Ritchie and Cavill's team-ups do on streaming, this feels like a viable concept.

Guy Ritchie & Henry Cavill's Collabs Haven't Repeated One Part Of Ritchie & Jason Statham

Cavill will need to do a few more Ritchie films if he's going to overtake Jason Statham's currently tally, but he has definitely become one of the filmmaker's regular collaborators. An obvious step would be to pair Statham and Cavill for a movie, and honestly, Statham may have been a better fit for In the Grey than Jake Gyllenhaal proved to be.

One thing that's true of (almost) all of Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham movies is that they've been commercial successes. Putting 2006's poorly-received Revolver to one side, the likes of Snatch or Wrath of Man were hits long before they arrived on home media or streaming. This hasn't been the case with, well, any of the Cavill/Ritchie movies to date.

All three have been financial duds, only to find a second life on streaming platforms. Between his TV shows like MobLand or the Apple TV+ exclusive movie Fountain of Youth, Ritchie is a filmmaker who has fully embraced the streaming model. The underperformance of his movies with Cavill has been offset by VoD and streaming, but it must sting that they don't have a single box office smash together.

Guy Ritchie Is Reuniting With Jason Statham

It's hard to believe that, before 2021's Wrath of Man, Ritchie and Statham hadn't worked together for 16 years. With that gritty action thriller and their 2023 follow-up Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, they picked up like no time had passed. They'll hopefully continue their winning streak with the upcoming gangster thriller Viva La Madness, based on the novel by Layer Cake author J.J. Connolly.

Despite Viva La Madness being a sequel novel to Layer Cake, it appears Ritchie's adaptation will have no links to the 2004 adaptation of the latter book, which starred Daniel Craig. Instead, Statham will step into the role of drug dealer X, with other Ritchie regulars like Vinnie Jones, Jonny Lee Miller and Babs Olusanmokun playing supporting roles. This movie has long been a passion project for Statham, who originally planned to turn the book into a TV series during the 2010s.

On paper, Viva La Madness feels like a return to the very British gangster comedies that Ritchie and Statham made their names on. It will probably still feature Statham beating people up -since that's what audiences demand - but as Snatch or Spy proved, he's great with comedy too. If the film could recapture some of the energy of their earlier collaborations, it could be something special indeed.

Ritchie is one of the hardest-working directors in the business, so it probably won't be long until he reunites with Henry Cavill or Statham on another project. Again, a film teaming his two favorite leads would be a treat, but if Ritchie and Cavill just want to continue making slick romps like In the Grey, that sounds perfectly fine too.
