Lead your legions to glory in asynchronous autobattler Fool King, launching later this year

Once upon a time, if you fought the king and won, you became the new king. Thems were the rules. I'm not sure if those are still the rules—I live in the UK, so maybe even pondering this is treason—but I reckon these days you'd just get arrested. But, we don't have to wonder about real life when there are videogames like Fool King that delve into this exact subject matter.

In Fool King, which just debuted a new trailer at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, you've got to fight your way through the legions left behind by past players to take a shot at the immortal Fool King themself.

A skeleton king sat on a throne, surrounded by monsters battling. The Fool King logo hangs in the sky.

It's an asynchronous autobattler, so your strategy is all in how you construct your own hordes of troops. There's a lot of medieval and fantasy options to choose from. You've got standard units like archers, catapults, and knights, and more spectacular grunts like fire wizards, hell bats, and one hulking behemoth that's just called hammer—probably on account of its massive hammer.

After deciding who to send into battle, you can imbue them with the power of gods. There are four godly playstyles with over 120 upgrades at your disposal. Teleport straight to an enemy that tries to attack you, give your melee units a 50% attack speed buff, or turn your foes undead as soon as you touch them. If you want to get hands on with some of these abilities, check out the Fool King demo on Steam.

Although the game is an autobattler, you don't just send your troops into the fray without any guidance. You can make use of the terrain, taking advantage of choke points like bridges or cover in tall grass.

And as for the asynchronous aspect of Fool King, you're actually going up against other players' armies. Defeat enough, and you can claim the throne for yourself and declare "rule-breaking" decrees that will affect others who try to come after you. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but we don't have long to wait to find out. Fool King is out November 16, 2026. Wishlist it on Steam.

The demo is out now, with the full game releasing November 16, 2026.
