Pokémon And Yu-Gi-Oh Finally Get The Crossover They Deserve
Growing up, my friends and I would fight over which TCG we should play between Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. We all had a fascination with Pokémon as a result of having played the games, but Yu-Gi-Oh held a special place in my heart thanks to the phenomenal anime and great card designs. It was a debate that was had until we turned 12, at which point my friends abandoned their affection for trading card games, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh altogether, leaving me behind with a whole lot of cards and no one to play with.
It has always felt like Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon have been natural rivals since the very start, with Yu-Gi-Oh poking fun at Pokémon, and Pokémon decimating Yu-Gi-Oh with its monolithic sales and continued relevance. It's a shame the two weren't created in our current golden era of crossovers and multiverses, as I'm sure they'd have shared a healthier relationship. Fortunately, after enduring decades of strife over this eternal debate, fans of either franchise (but certainly not both) can rest easy, as the two are coming together in what can only be described as the ultimate crossover.
Pokémon + Yu-Gi-Oh Is A No-Brainer
Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh feel like a match made in heaven. While the two obviously have their differences, the core premise of collecting creatures (either in balls or in card form) is inherently the same, as is the focus on battling with said creatures. Sure, one has Kaiba summon three Blue-Eyes White Dragons without paying their tribute cost and the other is a 1 v 1 or 2 v 2 scenario, but it isn't difficult to imagine the two coming together. After all, if Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh can collaborate, then Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh should have absolutely no trouble doing so.
As aforementioned, this crossover is finally happening, although, unfortunately, not in any official capacity. While that day may eventually come, today players can download a brand-new ROM hack that combines the story, characters, and cards of the criminally underrated Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories with Pokémon Emerald's gameplay and overall style. It is a combination that makes a lot of sense, not least because Yu-Gi-Oh titles like The Sacred Cards and Reshef of Destruction were already trying to emulate Pokémon's success with a similar gameplay style.
Pokémon ROM Hacks Are On Another Level
The ROM in question is Pokémon: Forbidden Memories, and comes from modder Nato_pixador. It is an incredibly impressive endeavor, one that recreates the entire map of Forbidden Memories within Pokémon Emerald, while also bringing over 202 cards from the game utilizing their official artwork. Every character from Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories is present, its story has been faithfully retold, and progression has been retooled to work within Pokémon Emerald's framework.
Pokémon: Forbidden Memories is yet another showcase of just how ridiculous Pokémon ROM hacks are getting. Sure, they've always been impressive, but recreating an entirely different game from another franchise within the somewhat limited framework of a GBA title is nothing short of astounding. Of course, Yu-Gi-Oh enthusiasts will know that a similar ROM hack for Pokémon FireRed already exists, titled POKeDUEL, but that is more focused on delivering a Yu-Gi-Oh experience utilizing Pokémon mechanics, rather than adapting a specific game.

Of course, you will need a Pokémon Emerald ROM to get this working, which should be obtained legally through already owning a copy. It's amazing to see fans of both Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon come together and create something new and exciting, especially when The Pokémon Company and Konami seemingly can't. I sincerely hope we get to see more projects like this, as both Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, while fundamentally at odds in so many ways, feel like they're made for one another.
