What's Going On With Reacher Season 5?

While Reacher season 5 is definitely happening, not a lot is known about the fifth outing of Prime Video’s successful action thriller series yet. Prime Video has plenty of great thrillers in its back catalogue, but the streaming service still needed a true flagship show to replace its iconic superhero satire The Boys when the comic book adaptation wrapped its five-season run in May 2026.

R-rated, brutal, and unpredictable, The Boys was a massive critical success since its 2019 debut and proved as popular with viewers as it was with reviewers throughout its run. Although The Boys spawned the spinoffs Gen V and The Boys Presents: Diabolical, it wasn’t immediately clear what Prime Video’s new biggest show would be when the series ended in 2026. Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings prequel The Rings of Power was one of its most ambitious and expensive shows, but that largely family-friendly series lacked the boundary-pushing edginess and grit of The Boys.

Meanwhile, after the spy franchise Citadel proved an expensive misfire for the streaming service, the darker spy show The Terminal List was a little too dark to be as big a mainstream pop culture phenomenon as The Boys. Luckily, the streaming service had another trick up its sleeve. The critically adored action thriller Reacher came out of nowhere in 2022 to become a record-breaking success for the streamer, and Prime Video renewed the show for a fifth outing before its fourth season even premiered thanks to this success.

Is Reacher Season 5 Happening?

Reacher was renewed for a fifth season in May 2026, before the show’s season 4 premiere in August. While this might seem a little premature on the part of Prime Video, the show’s historic success thoroughly justifies the early renewal. Based on the bestselling novel series of the same name by author Lee Child, Reacher stars Alan Ritchson as the titular hulking soldier of fortune, a drifter and military veteran.

Blessed with brains, brawn, and a literal inability to feel fear, Reacher roams from city to city uprooting criminal conspiracies and taking on corrupt authorities with each new adventure. Season 1 of the series saw Reacher take on the corrupt cops of Margrave with the help of Willa Fitzgerald’s love interest Roscoe, while season 2 gave the show an urban twist by transplanting Reacher to a bigger city. Reacher faced his worst enemies yet in season 3, but season 4 will see the show take on an even darker tone.

Based on the 2009 Child novel Gone Tomorrow, Reacher season 4’s story will be a paranoid political thriller that sees the show’s antihero take on forces that go all the way to the top of the American government. It is tough to see how season 5 will outdo this escalation, as Reacher tackling small-town criminals could feel like small fry after seeing Ritchson’s character defeating such high-profile antagonists.

However, viewers can be assured that Reacher season 5 will find a way around this, as the fifth outing is most certainly happening and was already filming as of late July 2026. Ritchson took to Instagram to announce the first day of production, although other details on the shoot are sparse for the time being. The little that is known about season 5 came from a conversation the star had with ScreenRant earlier in July.

What We Know About Reacher Season 5's Production Timeline

Ritchson confirmed that season 5’s scripts were already written by that stage, and that the second half of 2026 would be spent filming the outing for Prime Video. From this information alone, viewers can surmise that the show will wrap up production near the end of the year, as season 1 filmed for about 4 months, season 2 took about five months to film, and seasons 3 and 4 were shot over the course of between five and six months.

Since Reacher season 4 finished filming in late 2025 and will be released in mid 2026, it stands to reason that viewers might be able to expect season 5 to arrive in mid 2027. However, this projection admittedly fails to account for Reacher’s upcoming Neagley spinoff, which will also feature Ritchson in a recurring supporting role. Focused on Maria Sten’s eponymous old friend of the original show's hero, the show will follow Neagley’s investigation into the death of an old associate of hers.

When Is Reacher Season 5 Likely To Release?

Since Reacher season 5 won’t want to overshadow the release of its own spinoff, the show may delay the release of this outing by a few months to accommodate the arrival of Neagley season 1. As such, viewers may need to wait until closer to the end of 2027 for Reacher’s fifth screen outing. Fortunately, the fact that Ritchson’s Reacher will appear in Neagley season 1 means his screen absence won’t last too long.

Which Lee Child Book Could Reacher Season 5 Adapt?

Reacher grabs a man by the throat in Reacher season 2

So far, there is no way of knowing which Child book season 5 of Reacher will adapt, since the show has not followed a particularly clear pattern throughout its run to date. So far, Reacher has adapted Reacher Book 1, Killing Floor, in season 1, Book 14, Bad Luck and Trouble, in season 2, and Book 11, Persuader, in season 3. The upcoming Reacher season 4 adapts Book 16, Gone Tomorrow, but Tom Cruise’s earlier Jack Reacher movies from the 2010s already adapted Book 12, One Shot, and Book 20, Never Go Back.

While it was always unlikely that the show would revisit one of the books adapted in Cruise’s movies, Reacher made this outright impossible with one season 2 decision. In that outing, the show stated the events of One Shot took place offscreen after season 1, meaning the 2005 Child book has already happened within the Prime Video show’s timeline. However, this still leaves quite a few books for the creators to choose from.

For this writer’s money, there is no contest. 1999’s Book 3, Tripwire, is both one of the most over-the-top books in the series and one of the stories with the most colorful and memorable setting, taking place in Key West, Florida. Since Bosch creator Michael Connelly himself complimented the novel upon its release, this is the book that Reacher season 5 should use as a lighter, more outlandish palate cleanser after season 4’s gritty story.
