Green Lantern Lore Officially Introduces Permanent New Lantern Color: All Details

DC makes multiple game-changing tweaks to Green Lantern lore, including the introduction of a whole new Lantern Corps. The “green” in Green Lantern may be the single most influential element of the heroes' entire mythology, since it transformed what could have been a straightforward superhero identity into an enormous cosmic system. When Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern, the color initially signified the green energy of willpower and the authority of the Green Lantern Corps. Over time, DC turned the color itself into a piece of world-building. The Green Lantern concept expanded beyond one hero and one power ring into an interstellar organization with several corps and sectors.

DC eventually pushed the idea far beyond the traditional emotional-spectrum corps, using different colors to explore increasingly strange forms of Lantern power. Beyond the standard corps, Black Lanterns took the concept into death itself, with black rings capable of reanimating the dead, while White Lanterns represented life and the fusion of all emotions. DC has also introduced the Ultraviolet Corps, whose invisible portion of the emotional spectrum draws power from negative emotions, as well as Phantom Lanterns, the futuristic Gold Lanterns, and other unconventional forms of ring-based power.

There are countless other types of light and color that DC has yet to explore, but one of the most visually striking is now an official part of the DC Universe's Green Lantern mythos.

DC Introduces The Chrome Lantern Corps

After Guy Gardner exits the Emotional Expanse by coming into an agreement with the Emotional Entities, the Allsight gains the power of the Chrome Lantern, now able to wield each individual force of the whole Emotional Spectrum separately at will. With help from Aya and all active Lanterns, Guy defeats the Manhunters and shares his newfound powers with Jessica Cruz, who becomes DC's second Chrome Lantern. Following the Manhunters' defeat, Guy and Jessica have shared their Chrome Lantern power with dozens of other Lanterns. Guy Gardner makes the creation of the Chrome Lanterns official with their own oath, written by Guy himself:

The Chrome Lantern Corps is formed by several famous ring wearers, including Simon Baz, John Stewart, Keli Quintela, Jo Mullein, the Blue Lantern Bro'Dee Walker, and the Yellow Lantern Soranik Natu. Aya also joins them in a solid body, and they're led by Jessica Cruz, still leader of the Green Lanterns, as well as by Guy Gardner, who retains his Allsight status. Most importantly, Green Lantern Corps #19 reveals that the Chrome Lanterns are able to revert to their original Lantern color and continue their duties in their respective corps.

DC's Lantern Lore May Have Just Changed Forever

The Chrome Lanterns Are Only One Of DC's Latest Additions

The Chrome Lanterns join the White Lanterns as the most powerful and pure type of ring wearers in the DC Universe, but Green Lantern Corps also makes other changes. After Guy Gardner and Jessica Cruz swear to protect them, all the Emotional Entities now live together, in peace, with the Lantern Corps, taking the name of "Alpha Guardians." In Green Lantern Corps #19's last page, the Emotional Entities are shown playing with multiple members of all Lantern Corps, including the avarice-powered Larfleeze himself.

This means that all Lantern Corps are now capable of joining their diverging energies into one single force at any time, enhanced by the very embodiment of their part of the Emotional Spectrum, regardless of whether it goes against emotions like rage, fear, or avarice. And when the threat warrants it, all Lanterns can tap into the power of the Chrome energy, which allows them to access the rest of the Emotional Spectrum. Never have the DC Universe's Lanterns been so unified and thus as powerful as they are now.
