Your Fire Stick is getting a free display upgrade

Back in April, Amazon announced the new Fire TV Stick HD, a refreshed version of its entry-level 1080p streaming stick. It brought several notable changes, including a slimmer design, a USB-C port, and Vega OS, Amazon's new Linux-based operating system that, unfortunately, doesn't support sideloading.

But tucked away in that announcement was another interesting reveal: Amazon was also working on a new accessibility feature for Fire TV devices called Adaptive Display.

Amazon already offers a number of accessibility features on its Fire TV Sticks, including Dialogue Boost, Audio Descriptions, and High Contrast Text. Now, Adaptive Display is joining that lineup, making on-screen text and menus more readable as Amazon begins rolling the feature out to users.

The 4K Select gets it first

First things first, if you're wondering how Adaptive Display actually works, the feature automatically increases the size of text, menus, and other on-screen elements to make everything easier to see on your Fire TV. It also proportionally scales any artwork on screen, helping keep images clear without making them look pixelated.

There are multiple Adaptive Display levels available, allowing you to adjust the size of user interface elements to your preference. In the images above, the first shows the largest Adaptive Display option, the second shows a smaller setting, and the third shows the default size with Adaptive Display turned off. As you can see, it can make a noticeable difference when it comes to readability and making content easier to navigate.

"When turned on, the feature enlarges smaller items like text and menus while proportionally scaling content artwork, creating a more balanced browsing experience," Amazon explained in a blog post.

If you want to try Adaptive Display for yourself, you won't have to wait much longer, as Amazon has officially started rolling out the feature, and it's available first on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select. The company says the new Fire TV Stick HD will also receive the feature in the coming weeks.

As for the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Amazon hasn't confirmed when, or even if, Adaptive Display is coming to those devices. Pocket-lint has reached out to Amazon for clarification and will update this story if we hear back.

Overall, Adaptive Display looks like a useful addition to Fire TV, especially if you sometimes struggle to read what's on your screen. Earlier this year, Amazon also rolled out its redesigned Fire TV interface for Fire TV Sticks, complete with a new home screen that lets you pin up to 20 apps. Adaptive Display should make that updated interface more comfortable to read.

Amazon isn't alone in making a feature like Adaptive Display, as Apple is also working on a similar feature called Larger Text, which is coming to the Apple TV 4K with tvOS 27 this fall, which similarly increases the size of text and artwork throughout the interface to make everything clearer to read.
