Jason Statham's New R-Rated Revenge Thriller Polarizes Critics On Rotten Tomatoes
Jason Statham's new revenge thriller, Mutiny, is not exactly winning over critics.
Statham is back in action as his protagonist seeks vengeance against those who framed him for the murder of his boss. When he lands on a cargo ship, he unravels an international conspiracy. Mutiny hopes to continue Statham's critical success following the action thriller Shelter, which came out earlier this year, and now the reviews are in.
Unfortunately, Mutiny has critics divided, with the Rotten Tomatoes score debuting at 44%. However, the rating will fluctuate since only 16 reviews have been tabulated so far. Nevertheless, Statham's last few movies have been a hit-or-miss with critics. Shelter had a fresh score of 64%, followed by A Working Man's 46% and The Beekeeper's 71%.

While many critics agree that Statham is the highlight in the thriller and predict that audiences will have a good popcorn flick, the biggest complaint is that the story is uninspiring and dull. Other issues include the odd pacing, Roland Møller's underdeveloped villain, and a formulaic narrative. As a result, several reviewers agree that Mutiny is not one of Statham's strongest movies, given that he's had a few critical triumphs in recent years.
In ScreenRant's review of Mutiny, George Bate also shared a similar sentiment that the thriller suffers from "Aimless, dull, and uninspired with its action." Although the movie "begins on intriguing," the shift to the boat storyline "is so poorly executed that one could be forgiven for questioning if the set-up was for an entirely different movie." Earning a 3 out of 10 stars, Mutiny is plagued by too many issues, including uninteresting characters and a lack of tension.
Despite the setback with critics, ultimately, the most important voice is the audience, who typically approve of Statham's action thrillers. That was the case with his more recent projects, A Working Man and Expend4bles, which earned 87% and 69% audience scores, respectively.
Meanwhile, Statham remains active in the action genre, with at least three projects already in post-production. He will reprise Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, after the first became a critical and commercial success. He also has the meta action movie Jason Statham Stole My Bike and Viva La Madness.
Alongside Statham in the lead, Mutiny also stars Annabelle Wallis, Møller, and Adrian Lester. Jean-François Richet directed the thriller, while Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis wrote the story.
Mutiny will be released in theaters on August 21, 2026.
