Tricks Behind a Spirited Away Animation

Animation Director Breaks Down the Tricks Behind a Spirited Away Scene

Explore how timing and muscle movement show resistance, and check out how 2D anime style can be translated into 3D.

Huu Tu Nguyen, Animation Director at Otsu Animation, highlighted the amazing animation tricks employed in the beloved film Spirited Away, created by Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli.

The animation director emphasizes that the scene, where Chihiro reaches into the spirit and pulls something out of the water, is not just a simple grab-and-pull action but a visualization of intense body and muscle movement, as the character's body reacts to resistance and finds a balance. Timing is also important, as a "special pause" highlights the motion's resistance.

Animator Seter MD also explored the iconic film's 2001 water scene and recreated the water VFX in After Effects. Fabrizio Espindola, author of "The Unity Shaders Bible," later crafted his own version of the effects in the engine, also preserving the charm of the Ghibli-style animation.

The film has served as inspiration for many artists. Thus, 3D Artist Noggi showcased three different Spirited Away scenes recreated with Blender, and Senior Environment and Prop Artist Franky Gandia recreated the film's train tracks scene in Unreal Engine 5.

If you want to recreate anime-style water in 3D, you can check out Seter MD's tutorial mentioned above or follow a step-by-step guide on a waterfall animation, also inspired by Spirited Away, from a 3D Artist known as crzyzhaa.
