Lord Of The Rings Beloved PS2 Games Just Got Gorgeous Remasters
Despite only getting a handful of video game adaptations, The Lord of the Ring's translation to our PC monitors and CRT screens has always been rather successful. Sure, there have been a few duds here and there, but, for the most part, LOTR has continued to offer memorable new adventures across Middle-earth as well as faithful retellings of the movies and books that continue to entertain fans to this very day.
However, as great as many of the very best Lord of the Rings games are, the vast majority of them are no longer accessible, and even more have aged poorly. That isn't an indictment on their overall quality, as even the most poorly aged of the LOTR games continue to offer truly astounding gameplay. Nevertheless, for graphics purists and those looking for a more modern Lord of the Rings video game experience in 2026, it could prove a problem. Fortunately, recent remasters of the very best PS2 LOTR games are fixing both of those issues for good.
Both The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on PlayStation 2 are over 20 years old, and, consequently, haven't aged particularly well. Of course, for those who love its chunky visuals, playing them today remains a delightful treat. However, for those who simply want a less blurry and HD experience, it poses a rather significant issue. It would be a shame should these games remain unplayable to the majority of folks merely over dated graphics, which is why their respective recent remasters are so important.
Modder The128ReBits has released a HD texture pack for both games. These texture packs upscale all environmental and character assets using AI, and offer a 4K Ultra option for those who want the best-looking versions and a Lite version for those interested in playing the remasters on weaker systems. Of course, this isn't the first major Lord of the Rings project to use AI, but it is the first video game, even if it is in an unofficial capacity. Regardless, these texture packs serve as the definitive versions of both games, as it is unlikely we'll ever get official remasters.
The texture packs are available via ModDB and will only work with the original GameCube version of the game. Naturally, those interested in playing an upscaled version of either The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers or Return of the King (or both, of course) will need to legally obtain a GameCube ROM of the respective game and play it through the Dolphin emulator. Instructions on how to download and install the texture packs are available via their official ModDB page, and it is a fairly straightforward process that even those new to the modding scene will understand.
It is great to see fans offer a new way to experience a classic LOTR game, especially one that remains largely unplayable elsewhere. These remasters are also a fun distraction for players to enjoy while they await the upcoming Lord of the Rings RPG, as well as a great way of introducing complete newcomers to the series and its very best gaming entries. It would be great to see similar remasters of other lost LOTR video games, and hopefully they will arrive eventually.
