Hogwarts Legacy 2 has finally been announced – in the least exciting way
As if we needed any confirmation that it was on the way, Hogwarts Legacy 2 has finally been announced by Warner Bros Games, although perhaps not in the way you might expect.
After releasing in 2023, it's safe to say that Hogwarts Legacy went on to be a major success, having sold more than 40 million copies in the three years since.
With such mammoth sales, it felt like a given that a sequel would be in development, and only a matter of time before it was officially announced.
That being said, while this is exciting news for fans of the first game, it is a bit of an anticlimax that Hogwarts Legacy 2 was officially confirmed in a shareholder letter, with a line dryly mentioning "the second instalment of Hogwarts Legacy".
Unfortunately, the statement makes no reference to a release date, meaning we're still completely in the dark about when this sequel could land on consoles.
At the time of writing, there have been reports that the sequel could release alongside the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, capitalising on the hype surrounding it.
With the show expected to premiere in 2027, that idea doesn't seem too farfetched.
Assuming developer Avalanche Software got cracking on the sequel right away, which is not hard to believe, that would give the game a reasonable development time of around four years.
While the original game spent six years in development, a touch on the longer side, development on the sequel will have the benefit of plenty of existing assets to reuse.
Considering the likes of RGG Studio are capable of releasing almost a game a year thanks to their judicious reusing of assets, four years seems a likely timeline for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
And with both Gamescom's Opening Night Live and The Game Awards coming up in the next few months, it could be the perfect time to drop the first trailer.
