Square Enix Reveals Official Digital Game Sales Percentage
Just Like Capcom, Square Enix Won't Be Impacted Too Much By The Death Of Physical Games
PlayStation killing physical games will undoubtedly have a massive impact on several different businesses around the globe, but it's becoming increasingly clear that games publishing probably won't be one of them. Since the announcement that Sony is going to stop manufacturing discs, big companies like Capcom have come and shared exactly how many people are buying digitally.
Turns out, it's quite a lot, and in Capcom's case, it isn't too worried about physical discs going away as approximately 90 percent of its game sales are digital these days. A lot of people will probably buy their games digitally once they're forced to switch, and the percentage that won't will be so minor that Capcom probably won't be too bothered about the loss. And, unfortunately, Square Enix is the same.
Square Enix's Sales Are Almost All Digital
Revealed in Square Enix's latest financial report, the company's game sales between April 1 to June 30, 2026 were overwhelmingly digital. A whopping 6.65 million digital games were sold, compared to 730,000 physical games, meaning the digital sales percentage of Square Enix's games during that period was 90.1 percent, compared to 9.9 percent physical.
It's not great reading, and with that in mind, you can see why Square Enix has yet to confirm whether Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will have a physical release at all, or whether it will go for the code-in-a-box method like GTA 6. Final Fantasy does have a pretty high physical share, mainly due to the age of the fanbase, but even Final Fantasy can't compete with a 90.1 percent digital share.
With Square Enix now also seemingly completely on board the digital-only highway, it now seems like Nintendo is the last bastion for the physical game collectors out there. Unlike other Japanese companies, Nintendo has a pretty even digital and physical split when it comes to game sales, with 38.5 percent of game sales being physical. So, if you like physical, best to go place your bets on Nintendo for now.
