Marvel's Wolverine Actor Liam McIntyre Isn't Fazed by Players' Brutal Comments About the Game
Wolverine actor Liam McIntyre has seen what fans are saying about him and Insomniac's latest superhero game, but it's no skin off his nose.
Marvel’s Wolverine is out in the wild for many players worldwide, and opinions have been strong, to say the least. Discourse around the game has been unavoidable over the last month, with a vocal swath of players taking issue with Insomniac’s art direction, character design, and gameplay segments that were shown off by the media and early reviews.
One of the core topics of the Wolverine debate is actor Liam McIntyre, who plays the game’s titular character. Some fans don’t believe he bears a close enough resemblance to the iconic mutant, while others feel that Insomniac’s face scans and art style didn’t do his visage justice.
McIntyre has been excitedly posting about his role as Wolverine ever since his involvement was first announced, and some players have just now realized that he’s been seeing what they’re saying about him on social media this entire time.
In response to one of these players, McIntyre lightheartedly remarked that he’s seen much worse said about him ever since he started his acting career.
“Ha. Man, my career started with the responsibility of taking over for the incredible Andy Whitfield in Spartacus (RIP to that legend). I've read things you couldn't believe :) I just hope everyone has fun. I'm proud as hell of this game. It's a blast,” he wrote on X.

McIntyre did, indeed, play the historical Spartacus in Starz’s 2010s miniseries of the same name. The late great Andy Whitfield notably played the role of Spartacus in the show’s first season, Blood and Sand, but was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the blood, before the second season was filmed.
After his death in 2011, McIntyre was tasked with taking over the role — something that sparked strong reactions from fans at the time, though many now remember his time in the show fondly.
All that is to say, McIntyre is no stranger to vocal opinions from fans in response to taking on the mantle of iconic characters who are known to be played by a certain actor. Wolverine has been portrayed by Hugh Jackman in nearly all modern mainline X-Men films, and McIntyre’s take on the character is a big change for viewers who are used to seeing Jackman on screen — but McIntyre is excited for players to experience his version of the grizzled mutant, come what may.

Marvel’s Wolverine has been met with mixed reviews from critics; IGN gave the game a six out of 10, calling it “standard superhero fare” whose “slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion.”
