HBO's Lanterns Redeems James Gunn's DC Era With Stellar Rotten Tomatoes Score
The DC Universe is getting ready for its next major story.
The DCU's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" is bringing numerous iconic heroes and villains to the big and small screens. While they never had a chance to come to life during the DCEU era, James Gunn's universe is not holding back when it comes to the Green Lantern Corps.
As Lanterns premieres this Sunday, members of the press are finally sharing the reviews on the Hal Jordan and John Stewart-centric series. The Rotten Tomatoes score for the superhero series has officially debuted at 91%, based on 23 submitted reviews.
It's key to take into account that the score is still subject to change, as critics are still submitting their ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. That means the % could get higher or lower over the next couple of days and weeks.
In ScreenRant's Lanterns season 1 review, Felipe Rangel gave it a 9/10, saying how it "tells a well-written story with quite a few twists and emotional moments as the two human Green Lanterns investigate an alien threat in the small town of Rushville. Based on the amazing trio of creators behind the new DC series, I had high hopes for Lanterns." After having seen the first seven out of eight installments, Rangel praised the creative team, stating, "I can say that Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) have truly built something special that perfectly walks the line between HBO crime thriller and DC superhero epic."
Time will tell how the audience responds to the DCU series, but throughout 2026, it has been one of the most highly-anticipated projects, especially with the expansion of the Green Lantern Corps in Gunn's franchise.
While Lanterns season 2 has not been announced yet, the world has not seen the last of the Emerald Knights. Pierre and Nathan Fillion are set to reprise their roles in 2027's Man of Tomorrow, which is currently in production.
Lanterns premieres on Sunday, August 16, on HBO.
