An Investigation Into Whether The End Of Oak Street Is Secretly A Cloverfield Movie

The End of Oak Street has intrigued audiences for a long time with the possibility that it is not the standalone dinosaur sci-fi movie it appears to be, but rather a surprise Cloverfield movie. The latter started in 2008 as Matt Reeves directed a monster invasion movie produced by J.J. Abrams.

Cloverfield cultivated a passionate online following thanks to the first movie's viral Slusho marketing campaign. Its success allowed Abrams and Bad Robot to make a loosely connected universe of sci-fi films, one that officially includes 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox. But over the years, there have been several theories about secret, unofficial entries, such as Overlord.

The End of Oak Street is the latest. The 2026 sci-fi movie starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway follows a suburban family fending off dinosaur attacks after their entire street is transported through space and time. And with Abrams producing for Bad Robot, there have been lots of debates about whether it does exist in the Cloverfield franchise.

Now that The End of Oak Street is in theaters, an official answer regarding its Cloverfield connections has come. Whether everyone ultimately believes and agrees with the decision could vary, though, as The End of Oak Street's ending allows debate to ensue.

Why People Think The End Of Oak Street Could Be A Cloverfield Movie

There would be no questions about The End of Oak Street connecting to Cloverfield if it wasn't for Abrams' involvement. He's the one who helped retrofit Dan Trachtenberg's The Cellar into 10 Cloverfield Lane and Julius Onah's God Particle into The Cloverfield Paradox​​​​​​. Given the sci-fi nature of The End of Oak Street, it becoming the fourth movie in this franchise in secret would have fit a pattern.

Warner Bros.' marketing campaign only raised suspicions. The End of Oak Street's trailers held back plenty, stoking the flames of curiosity. There were even some fans who noted the similarities between the fonts used for Oak Street and previous Cloverfield movies.

That's just the start of the rabbit hole that fans went down pre-release trying to find connections between The End of Oak Street and Cloverfield. A Reddit user noted there is a real-life Oak Street in Santa Monica, California, close to Cloverfield Blvd, which was an inspiration for the original film's title.

Others pointed to small details from Cloverfield Paradox about a particle accelerator accident displacing five city blocks as setup for The End of Oak Street. There is also the decision to have the main family in Oak Street have Platt as their last name. T.J. Miller played Hud Platt in the first Cloverfield, and since the new film takes place over 25 years earlier, a family relation became a plausible clue for these movies existing in the same universe.

What The Filmmakers Have Said About The End Of Oak Street Being A Cloverfield Movie

Due to how much speculation mounted about the potential Cloverfield connection, it has been a topic that those involved with the film have addressed in the press. Their comments largely squash the hopes of The End of Oak Street taking place in the Cloverfield timeline.

Abrams is rather adamant that the dinosaur movie is completely separate. He told THR, "The only connection to our Cloverfield movies is that Ewan’s partner is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane, who we were very lucky to get to work with and who I adore." He continued to say, "So there was that, but other than that, people are just making connections that they happen to see."

This goes to show that Abrams didn't work his producer magic to sneak in any Cloverfield connections as The End of Oak Street was being made. His statement suggests that there aren't any stealth Easter eggs to discover that could bridge the two sci-fi worlds together. These are intended to be totally different universes.

Director David Robert Mitchell mostly aligns with this thought process, too. When he addressed The End of Oak Street's possible Cloverfield ties, he confirmed that he wrote the script before ever talking to Abrams and that you should "make of that whatever you will." But he also made some curious follow-up remarks that may leave the door open.

Mitchell said "there are certainly some answers" in the movie about a potential connection before acknowledging, "It's a subject thing as to whether or not someone has enough" evidence for or against these worlds colliding in some fashion. This could leave the impression that The End of Oak Street may still be a stealth Cloverfield movie, but Mitchell's comments about the writing process suggest that was never the intention.

So Is The End Of Oak Street A Cloverfield Movie?

Ultimately, there is no firm evidence at this point to suggest that The End of Oak Street is a Cloverfield movie. Abrams and Mitchell have both done their part to mostly shoot down the speculation, even if it is sure to continue. There is also enough evidence in the movie to explain the dinosaurs, time travel, etc. without needing a connection to Cloverfield.

The End of Oak Street makes it clear that Oak Street and the Platt family were transported to a prehistoric age via wormholes. They act as portals to other places in space and time, and the glowing spheres are the movie's visual representation of them. There is even a news report that NASA is investigating "unusual ripples in space" and "solar flares," but rather than being connections to Cloverfield's parallel universes, particle accelerators, etc., these seem to be the results of the wormholes.

There is also the reality that even if Abrams and Mitchell wanted to make The End of Oak Street a Cloverfield movie, they might not have been able to legally. Abrams and Bad Robot made all the previous sci-fi anthology films for Paramount, giving that studio the rights to all Cloverfield titles. Even with Paramount looking to buy Warner Bros., the studio probably would not have signed off on the franchise continuing through a rival's production.

All that said, there is nothing in The End of Oak Street that makes it impossible for it to be a Cloverfield movie, either. It could be retconned into part of the franchise down the road if Abrams gets approval. Even if not, The End of Oak Street could fit into anyone's head canon for the Cloverfield franchise and add a time-traveling dinosaur story to the constantly shifting sci-fi IP. But it's best to view these as different entities now.
