Why Spider-Man Is Able To Calm Hulk Down In Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Hulk story ends with the wall-smashing hero being pacified by Spider-Man, raising the question of how Peter was able to neutralize Banner's berserker counterpart given how difficult this has been shown to be in the MCU historically. Brand New Day's character roster is one of the most exciting parts of the 2026 MCU movie, particularly given how it furthers so many individual stories.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day furthering the story of the Hulk is one of the biggest and most important side stories of the film, as the Hulk's MCU arc has been told almost exclusively through his appearances in other heroes' releases. It's also crucial because of what it means for the future, since we've finally gotten the return of the classic Savage Hulk after a several-year-long wait.

Even more interesting still, Savage Hulk's return closed out with a particularly noteworthy set of moments, including the previously raging Hulk appearing to forfeit the battle between him and Spider-Man after some prompting from the latter hero. Why exactly this happened and what it means for the next stages of the MCU timeline are exciting to consider, especially with the final chapters of the Multiverse Saga on the near horizon.

The Hulk's Reaction To Spider-Man Draws From More Than One Part Of The MCU

The fight between Spider-Man, the Punisher, and a berserking Hulk - who goes from being mind controlled by Jean Grey, to causing havoc after being relinquished from her mental grasp - concludes in one of the most surprising battle endings the Hulk has been a part of thus far in the MCU. In the end, the green giant responds to Spider-Man's pleas for him to stop by doing so, and dropping several stories off the building they're battling on.

This naturally raised a lot of questions about how and why the hero's cries for mercy got through to the Hulk, when other requests for him to stop have been met with more berserking. Of course, it's worth noting that the Hulk stopped when Spider-Man reminded him he's Peter and then asked Bruce to stop hurting him, clearly unable to escape from the Hulk's clutches, and seemingly weakened by his own inhibitor.

It appears this may have been a sign that the Hulk remembers that Spider-Man is Peter, and that he has ties with Peter from long ago. The Hulk is effectively to some degree Bruce Banner's repressed memories in many iterations of Marvel's story, and it would make sense for him to have retained some fragment of the information Banner forgot thanks to the No Way Home memory-changing spell.

That said, it is still possible the Hulk is at least partially using Banner's current memories, and simply realizes the costumed creator of the inhibitor chip Spider-Man tries to put on him is the same awkward young man who clearly faked his name when speaking with Banner at Empire State University about such technology - though this would possibly be a more complex route to go down.

It's also worth keeping in mind that we know the Hulk can be pacified by someone he trusts trying to soothe him, as was the case with Natasha Romanoff previously in the MCU. While Bruce Banner and Peter Parker know little of each other at this point in time, it's possible that Spider-Man's cries for mercy were enough to reach the Hulk in this sense too - acting as a sort of inverse of the Thor vs Hulk fight in Thor: Ragnarok, with the Hulk realizing Peter isn't a threat and doesn't want to fight, and reacting accordingly.

The Hulk Knowing Peter Parker Is Spider-Man Is Perfect For The MCU's Next Chapters

Whatever route the MCU takes with the aftermath of this scene, the Hulk now having been trusted with Spider-Man reminding him that the web-swinging hero is Peter Parker is a fascinating direction for the franchise to have taken itself in.

With Spider-Man: No Way Home having reset the number of people who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man, the Hulk being one of the few characters who has a concrete and established reason to be aware of this connection is all the more key. While it appears neither hero may appear in Avengers: Doomsday, their roles in Avengers: Secret Wars appear to be somewhat inevitable - and no doubt crucial for the upcoming MCU movie that will provide a climactic finale for the Multiverse Saga, given their long-built histories in the franchise, and the popularity of both heroes.

Indeed, it wouldn't be surprising if this connection was used in some capacity after Spider-Man: Brand New Day within the plot of Avengers: Secret Wars, since it allows the Hulk and Spider-Man to have a bond that Peter isn't set to have with any other major MCU hero, which would no doubt be fascinating for both their respective arcs in the MCU, and for the other characters around them, as they attempt to work out when and how the Hulk and Spider-Man got to be pals.
