Apple TV's Dark Matter Story Plan For 3 Seasons Unveiled By Producer

Dark Matter has more plans to explore the multiverse.

The Apple TV science-fiction series is centered on Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics professor who is replaced by a version of himself from another reality, and must now traverse the never-ending multiverse to find his way back home. Season 1 adapted the full story of Blake Crouch's hit Dark Matter novel, but the show was still renewed for a second season, beginning a brand-new story for both readers and viewers.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con, Dark Matter producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry was asked if there have been any discussions about a potential season 3. She confirmed that not only have there been discussions, but that season 2 was greenlit and pitched to Apple TV with the intention to be followed by a third and final season. We designed season two, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons. We see it as a trilogy and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and having a real round and complete story. And we're very hopeful that that's something that happens. But we're also just so excited for people to see season two because I think it's just going to be so much fun for the fans.

Dark Matter season 2 doesn't debut on Apple TV until August 28, although audiences now know before the premiere that there are plans for another season. Season 3 has not been officially renewed yet, but chances of a renewal happening are promising since the streamer greenlit season 2 with an understanding of the intention to continue the story further. This also takes the pressure off of season 2 to neatly wrap up the entire series.

Along with Edgerton, who plays numerous versions of Jason, the Dark Matter cast features Jennifer Connelly as Daniela, Oakes Fegley as Charlie, Alice Braga as Amanda, Jimmi Simpson as Ryan, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton, Amanda Brugel as Blaire, and Aina Brei'yon as Dawn. In season 1, other versions of these characters appear as Jason navigates the multiverse and attempts to return to the one where an impostor has taken over his life.

Dark Matter season 1 ends with Jason, Daniela, and Charlie reunited and entering a new reality where they can have a fresh start together. In a different universe, Ryan and Amanda meet, while versions of Leighton, Blaire, and Dawn are also shown to be scattered across the multiverse. Season 2 will not only pick up on these story threads, but will expand them much further given that there are plans for another season after this one.

Brugel, the actor who plays Blaire, was promoted to a series regular for season 2 and Invincible star Chris Diamantopoulos is joining the cast as well, although who he is playing remains under wraps for the time being.

Along with streaming numbers that gave Apple TV the confidence to greenlight a season without existing source material, Dark Matter season 1's reviews were generally positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 81% critics' score and an 80 audience score. In ScreenRant's review, Alex Harrison noted that "this series features excellent performances across the board, but Edgerton, especially, is doing something special with his dual role."

The author of Dark Matter, Crouch, created the television series, serves as an executive producer, and wrote all the season 1 episodes alongside Ben-Zekry. Edgerton is also aboard the show as an executive producer. Matt Tolmach, whose other credits include Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is an executive producer as well.

Dark Matter season 2 premieres on Apple TV on August 28.
