Despite having been released nearly a decade ago at this point, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still widely talked about today for its sheer scale and abundant sense of curiosity. While the open-world RPG is already a GOTY-winning title in its own right, fan-made creations like the BOTW BetterVR mod take things to an entirely new level.
Although the mod was already a revolutionary way to experience BOTW back when it released in 2025, the years-long project just got a massive update that not only fixes many of its most common bugs, but completely alters how it feels to play, as evident in the official trailer posted by creator Crementif - BetterVR Mod on YouTube
Breath Of The Wild's VR Mod Is Back And Better Than Ever
Compared to the much slower-paced and somewhat choppy trailer that initially revealed BOTW's new VR mod, the updated accolades trailer shows off just how far the project has come in the seven months since it was revealed, with far smoother movements and seamless combat that you would expect from a native VR game.
In terms of what the latest 0.9.20 update actually adds to the mod, fans can expect more immersive bow aiming, camera fixes, more reactive character movements, visual settings, and a multitude of other bug fixes to make the experience even more immersive. BOTW's BetterVR mod creator has also promised that even more updates are coming with its 1.0 release, with ambitious new features like dual wielding, additional performance updates, and even multiplayer compatibility.
Although there was some concern that Nintendo would go after the mod creators and shut down the project early, BOTW's BetterVR mod has been coming along excellently since it was initially revealed, which is well on the way to becoming one of the best open-world VR games you can find thanks to the excellent foundations offered by BOTW.
Breath Of The Wild And VR Are An Excellent Combo
Although the mod still comes with the downside that you'll need to set up an emulator, own a VR headset, and have a strong enough PC to get the system working, the fan-made project is certainly one of the most unique mods for BOTW out there, and is well worth keeping an eye on as more updates are released.
As if the immersive world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in VR wasn't enough, the same trailer also showcased a teaser for the creator's next project with a VR mod for Mario Kart 8, coming soon, which makes its environments look even more impressive through the new first-person point of view.
