The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 5 trailer sees the spinoff's core duo planning a massive rescue mission after episode 4's thrilling conclusion. Dead City season 3 has been all about Maggie developing her new group, leading alongside Renata as the pair attempt to expand their hospital home. However, after Maggie and Luis return with medical supplies from the Trader, tragedy strikes. A massive sinkhole opens up in the ground, sending the group's food supply into the zombie-infested New York City subway system. Without food, the group must make a desperate decision to survive.

Now, AMC has released a new trailer for Dead City season 3, episode 5, showing Maggie, Negan, Renata, and Luis planning out a mission to get the food back, so the group doesn't starve. This involves taking a massive number of people into the subway system, with Maggie warning one false move might just kill all of them. A survivor is seen dangling above a group of hundreds of Walkers, while Negan hypes up a group to go down there. A line from Renata signals things will go awry, but just how badly remains unclear for now.

Dead City's characters have learned the importance of working together in the apocalypse, particularly because of how important people have become. Season 3, episode 4 emphasized this when Maggie and Luis were invited to a party by a group near the Trader's cabin. It leads to some rather wholesome and heavy moments signaling Maggie's wish to build a new life in Manhattan, despite still feeling tied to her past. It's a theme that may continue into episode 5, since she also lost her wedding ring from Glenn during the sinkhole incident.

Negan's involvement also comes after Renata revealed she knows he killed the Dama, which he perceives as a threat to make him become more involved in helping the group. However, he's been assisting of his own free will, too, such as gathering the dead for the methane tanks that power the hospital. Since he's also been shown to care about Hershel despite the friction in their pasts, it's likely he's assisting the group of his own free will, no matter how he makes it seem from the outside looking in.

multi-answer Which The Walking Dead spinoff do you prefer?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

But, when it comes to the subway system, Dead City's leaders will have to work together to figure out the best course of action to save their food supply. It seems like the giant Walker herd that's living underground will be the biggest problem, since the group needs to go through them in order to even find out where their supplies ended up. Similar to season 3, episode 3's hospital situation, it seems like the danger is only going to escalate as the episode's events unfold.

With the show now at the halfway point of season 3, The Walking Dead: Dead City has plenty of new and exciting narrative threads it can weave going into the upcoming episodes. The food rescue mission seems like the biggest event of the season so far, the results of which may define whether Maggie's dream of a peaceful community can come true. It also means plenty of exciting Walker action ahead as the group does their best to survive.
