Fable Release Date Trailer Still

Playground Games’ upcoming reboot of Fable is one of Xbox’s most exciting projects, bridging the older games and new fans just as Gears of War: E-Day does. But the modern RPG has the difficult task of reviving a beloved series and surpassing what makes the original trilogy so successful. Everything we have seen in the trailers has been promising, and I am looking forward to exploring this new Albion, especially its 1,000+ NPCs. Now, Fable’s game director, Ralph Fulton, has spoken about the game, offering insight into how the team is trying to land the finale.

Fulton reveals the ending was given serious attention and focus throughout Fable’s development while keeping the series’ humor and storytelling in mind. In an interview with the Guardian, he speaks about how Playground Games wanted to give the player freedom and no lock them into the main story while still making it feel impactful and important to the entire game. This is something that will be challenging considering Fable is a lengthy open world built on player choice and freedom.

Playground Games Is Fully Confident in Fable’s Ending

The most important thing to take away from Fulton’s interview with the Guardian is that the team promises to “stick the landing,” something that is hard to balance. Fable has had a rocky relationship with its narrative endings and how they are executed. Fable 2 is particularly infamous for how anticlimactic the final battle with Lucian is. With how prominent the antagonist is in the game, many fans were disappointed despite it fitting the game’s humor. Fulton seemingly addresses this, saying,

“It’s easy to look at industry metrics saying 100% of people start a game and only 25% finish, and decide not to invest heavily in the finale,” Fulton said, continuing, “We relentlessly pursued quality here.”

Players may spend dozens of hours exploring, completing side quests, and developing their characters before reaching the main story’s conclusion. Playground appears to be treating that final stretch as an important part of the experience, even if some players never reach it. But this is not to say that the main quest will feel urgent or force the players on that path. Instead, playground games have given players the room to explore as they see fit.

Overall, Fable’s ending is promising something more than just simply defeating a final enemy. The player’s identity and the choices they make throughout the game will play heavily in how the narrative concludes. Playground Games has not revealed what choice the players will face in the finale, but Fulton and his team are confident Fable fans will love the direction the studio has taken.
