Weapons in fantasy movies come in all shapes and sizes, and the best are often highlights of the titles or parts audiences remember years later. Swords are a big part of that. They are often historically significant, and the wielder's skill and strength also determine their might.

As the user's abilities are often a part of what makes a weapon so strong, fantasy swords are surprisingly difficult to rank by power. Blade's sword, for example, is a master-crafted weapon with a trap in the hilt. However, it's powerful because Blade is a skilled warrior, and a regular person is just as likely to hurt themselves with it as their opponents. That said, some swords in fantasy movies do have special abilities that elevate them beyond the realms of any regular weapon. Some of these powers are quite specific to the title they are in, but can be massively overpowered in the right hands.

In this list, we're ranking swords that have specifically appeared in movies. Unfortunately, this rules out some well-known candidates, such as Stormbreaker, Geralt's swords in The Witcher, or the Sword of Omens from Thundercats. Nevertheless, we still have some incredible weapons to pick from, and many are instrumental in our heroes' successes in their specific universes.

Whether you prefer master-crafted blades stronger than any other, or weapons that imbue their wielders with unlimited power, here are some of the strongest swords in fantasy movies.

8 Sting - The Lord Of The Rings / The Hobbit

Sting is one of the most famous weapons in The Lord of the Rings movies, and while it's not conventionally powerful, we've seen its usefulness firsthand. Sting is a beautiful Elven shortsword forged by the Elves of Gondolin.

The weapon has survived the test of time, but also has a special power. Sting glows blue when orcs are nearby, making the user much harder to ambush. This power arguably saved the Fellowship in the Mines of Moria, though its size does introduce a few drawbacks.

Sam (Sean Astin) successfully fends off Shelob with Sting in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, so It's perfectly capable of dealing damage. Still, it's only a short blade and the glow won't help in a conventional sword fight. Sting has a powerful ability, albeit situational.

7 The Sword of Gryffindor - Harry Potter

The Sword of Gryffindor is a magical artifact of great importance in Harry Potter. Witches and wizards don't typically use swords to fight. However, the sword can break the unbreakable and was instrumental in Voldemort's downfall.

Our heroes use the Sword of Gryffindor to destroy a Horcrux that was seemingly impervious before. Neville Longbottom also defeats Nagini with the sword, which is a key moment in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

6 The Atlantean Sword - Conan The Barbarian (1982)

Conan the Barbarian stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the mighty warrior, Conan, and he wields the Atlantean Sword. He finds it in an ancient tomb, and while it's significant to his story, it doesn't have any magical powers. Still, what it lacks in special abilities it makes up for elsewhere.

The Atlantean Sword is a mighty fantasy greatsword with an ornate grip and long, wide blade. It makes the list because it's such a powerhouse, capable of dealing devastating blows. Naturally, Conan's strength is part of why the Atlantean Sword is so dangerous. It's not a fine weapon, but it doesn't need to be.

The story of Conan's adventure is continued in Conan the Destroyer, and he wields the Atlantean Sword in both movies. It ranks low on the list because it's a regular sword, but the average sword user could not defend against too many powerful blows.

5 Sword of Triton - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Audiences are introduced to many magical artifacts in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, including the Sword of Triton in On Stranger Tides. The sword belongs to Blackbeard and is lower on the list because its supernatural power is very specific, though arguably overpowered in the movie.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of the most well-known wuxia movies ever made, with an incredible sword at the heart of the story. The Green Destiny is an exquisite Chinese straight sword named after its iconic green blade.

The Green Destiny is immediately recognizable, and while it doesn't have a supernatural power, it does have a unique property that makes it extraordinary. The sword is so strong that it can cut through other weapons. We don't know the full extent of its strength, though Jen (Ziyi Zhang) wields it in her legendary fight with Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), and it destroys every weapon she uses in that encounter.

The Green Destiny is borderline overpowered in the world of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, though its power is still limited by the user. It makes skilled warriors even more deadly, though we also see Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) disarm Jen with a stick, so it doesn't make its wielder unstoppable.

3 Andúril - The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Andúril is a legendary sword in The Lord of the Rings, and also quite difficult to place on the list. The weapon was originally named Narsil, and a shard of the broken blade was used to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. It was later reforged into Andúril for Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen).

While there are hints at somewhat mystical properties outside the movies, Andúril's power is mostly symbolic. It may not sound important, but it has huge implications in The Lord of the Rings, where much of the story is about uniting armies to battle Sauron's forces.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword boasts arguably the most magical portrayal of Excalibur. Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) wields the sword against a large group of masked fighters, and it seemingly conjures a storm around him. We also see Arthur effortlessly splitting his opponents' blades in half and taking down foes with inhuman power.

Excalibur can only be drawn from the stone by Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and seems to bestow supernatural strength upon its user. Arthur is no slouch in combat in the movie, and he's unstoppable with Excalibur in his hands.

1 The Sword of Power - Masters of the Universe (2026)

Masters of the Universe 2026 introduced modern audiences to He-Man, Eternia, and the power of Grayskull. When Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) holds the sword and utters the words "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!" he becomes He-Man, a being of unimaginable strength.

That power level is quite dependent on what lore you reference, as it has changed over the decades. The Sword of Power is a conduit for the power of Grayskull, so it doesn't technically create that power on its own. Nevertheless, it imbues Adam with almost cosmic-level strength and endurance.

Similar to Excalibur, the Sword of Power won't work for just anyone. It only transforms Adam in the 2026 movie, though it has worked for Skeletor and Teela in other Masters of the Universe lore.
