Deadpool's MCU Future Just Got An Optimistic Update From Star

According to the man who brings Deadpool to life on the big screen, the Merc with the Mouth has a bright future ahead of him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s been two years since Ryan Reynolds reprised Wade Wilson for Deadpool & Wolverine, which finally delivered a proper team-up between his character and Hugh Jackman’s Logan. Since then, there have been various rumors and reports about what’s next for Deadpool. Reynolds has now shared that plans are in motion to put the wise-cracking mercenary back in the spotlight.
During Fanatics Fest 2026 (via Hobby Nonsense), Reynolds indicated that another Deadpool movie is in the works, though he didn’t clarify if this would be a straightforward Deadpool 4 or some kind of offshoot for the upcoming Marvel movies slate. In his words:
There’s a few really deep cuts I think are missing from the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts from some of the comics… There’s stuff upcoming. There eventually will be another Deadpool.
Reynolds’ comments follow seven months after it was reported that he is “wisely focused” on the next Deadpool movie. Previously, in November 2024, the actor/creative had said that he needed to take a break from the franchise after Deadpool & Wolverine because working on these movies “sort of swallows [his] life whole.” Then, in December of that same year, Reynolds said that his ideas for another Deadpool movie would feature the character in a supporting role or as an “ensemble player.” He reaffirmed this past April that he’s still going in this creative direction.
As such, it remains to be seen if the next Deadpool movie will technically be considered Deadpool 4 or something else. In May 2025, it was reported that said project, in whatever form it comes in, would feature “three or four X-Men characters.” Such an approach sounds similar to the X-Force movie that was in development at 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the studio, and by extension, the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights, in 2019.
After playing Wade Wilson/Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds debuted as a more faithful adaptation of the character in 2016’s Deadpool. Deadpool 2 followed two years later, and then Deadpool & Wolverine revived the film series six years after that under the Marvel Studios umbrella. Reynolds and Jackman were joined in the latter movie by Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfayden, and Aaron Stanford, among others.
Like its predecessors, Deadpool & Wolverine earned positive critical reception. ScreenRant’s Deadpool & Wolverine review said that the movie “utilizes the multiverse to not only explain their joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but offer an exceptionally fun buddy comedy.” It’s also the most financially successful of the Deadpool movies, making $1.3 billion worldwide.
Along with this mysterious Deadpool movie that’s in development, there are conflicting reports about whether Wade Wilson will be seen in the Avengers: Doomsday cast come December 18. What is confirmed is that Reynolds will next be seen starring opposite Kenneth Branagh in the action comedy Mayday, which premieres September 4 on Apple TV. His 2027 movies include Animal Friends and Eloise.
