16 Years Later, This 10/10 PS3 Open-World RPG Is Free With PlayStation Plus
Though the PlayStation 3 was almost certainly the weakest mainline console that Sony has ever released (in an admittedly high quality field), it's important to remember just how many good games the platform hosted. Though a lot of those weren't necessarily exclusives, the power of the console meant that it could make games look pretty spectacular for the standards of the time.
The advent of backwards compatibility has brought a lot of those games back in a big way, offering a new generation of fans the chance to appreciate what makes them great. This is particularly true for those who are subscribed to PlayStation Plus, where the catalog features a ton of classic titles that run better than ever before on modern hardware.
While PlayStation-specific games might be the first that jump to mind, there are some other big franchises that have their older games on the platform, including one which has recently been thrust back into major relevance.
This Is One Of The All-Time Great RPGs
In case you weren't already aware, PlayStation Plus subscribers can play Fallout: New Vegas at no extra cost beyond their monthly rate. There are some important caveats to be aware of, though, as its status as a PS3 game means its only available via Cloud Streaming rather than download, which also means you'll need to be subscribed to the Premium tier.
It's such a brilliant game that it almost feels worth it, though, with Obsidian Entertainment doing a fantastic job of taking the franchise forward when they released the game back in 2010.
Not only that, but the release has been thrust into further relevance once again, after the release of the Fallout adaptation on Prime Video. There, New Vegas featured heavily in the show's second season, with a huge conflict between Caesar's Legion and the NCR already teed up for the third season, which is currently filming.
Fallout: New Vegas Still Holds Up Today
The game really does hold up remarkably well from a gameplay standpoint, and its really only the visuals that look a little dated at this point. Happily, we do also know that remasters of both Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 are on the way at some point, with those supposedly being farmed out to a third-party developer while Bethesda works on The Elder Scrolls VI. Those should be very nostalgic when they do arrive, so why not get in the mood by going back to play the original?
