The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is very much back at the forefront of the cultural zeitgeist once again, almost 30 years since the release of the original. The announcement from Nintendo that a full remake was on the way was genuinely quite a big moment in gaming, and it will be very interesting to see what they have cooked up, while retaining the magic of the original.
The fact remains that we don't really know anything about it just yet, beyond a quick look at the visuals in the initial teaser, with Nintendo likely reserving a specific Direct to really open the game up for a reveal. With all of that excitement, it's easy to forget that there were already fans out there showing us exactly what a next-gen Zelda could look like.
Over on YouTube, you should be able to find the Digital Dreams channel, where they regularly showcase older games with updated visuals, often rendered inside Unreal Engine 5 at resolutions of 8K. The latest of those is a video on Ocarina of Time, which as well as being shown off in 8K, also comes with updated lighting and visuals in many major areas.
The game obviously looks a lot more modern and recent, but there is a certain amount of the initial charm that has been lost in bringing it across to the new engine. That led to the comments being split on whether it was worthwhile at all, as well as speculating on whether that's the approach that Nintendo will take.
"I really dislike the lighting. Everything is either too bright or too dark," one comment read. While another added, "Of course, it looks very good compared to the OG Ocarina of Time, but it's no way near awesome [enough] for an Unreal Engine 5 game."
A third was quite vociferous in their negative feedback, saying, "I hate to be a hater and i wear no nostalgia glasses, but this ain't it. And it's so so so far from what it should be that it's pointless to even start typing why it ain't it. Sorry."
The official Ocarina of Time Remake is set to release later this year, so we should expect a full reveal for the game in the next six weeks or so, at the time of writing. Let's hope Nintendo manages to deliver the goods, because expectations from the existing fan base are going to be very high indeed.
