Looks like Microsoft is bringing Xbox 360 games to PC too
Just a few weeks ago, Microsoft surprised PC gamers with a new program that aimed to bring over original Xbox games to the platform. This transformation of the Xbox Backward Compatibility program means that a whole lot of exclusive classics are now on the table for returning as fully playable PC titles with enhancements. However, it seems Microsoft isn't stopping there.
Rumors have been circulating that Microsoft is also expanding this Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC program to include Xbox 360 titles. Now, The Verge has gotten its hands on a document from Microsoft that was sent to developers recently, which seemingly confirms the plans.
Per the leaked documents, the program will allow Xbox 360 games to run on the upcoming Project Helix next-generation console from Xbox (which can run PC games), Xbox PCs, as well as handheld devices.
It's the original publishers that have to give the OK for making their Xbox 360 titles backward compatible on PC platforms like this. They will also set the games' pricing and how it will be available to players (only store purchase or also included with Game Pass.)
The document had gone on to say that the rollout of Xbox 360 support for titles is expected to happen across 2027 and 2028 “across next-gen devices." Microsoft is also said to be planning a full launch of the original Xbox backward compatibility program sometime this October, expanding the four-game selection that's available now.
At the same time, more information about the upcoming Xbox disc-to-digital program, which was also leaked recently, had been contained within the document as well.
With the feature, players only have to insert a physical disc into their Xbox console, which will grant them a digital entitlement as if it was purchased from the Microsoft Store, giving them access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and other facilities.
While the document says this was slated to enter Insider testing in July and launch in August, it looks like this feature has been internally delayed. It's unclear when it will get a proper announcement. However, after seeing the backlash Sony is facing for revealing its future PlayStation all-digital plans, Microsoft may be waiting for things to settle before coming out with their own digital announcements.
