The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched in 2023 and became the second best-selling game in the franchise, only beaten by Breath of the Wild. It took everything great from that game, added building mechanics and brand-new areas both up in the sky and down below to explore. It was huge and yet somehow still ran well on the Nintendo Switch. Since launch, it has received many awards and praise from the industry and more importantly...from the fans. It's that fan love that has led to Tears of the Kingdom Online becoming a reality.
Showcased during the F3 2026 event, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Online is coming to us all on August 18, 2026. This fan-made mod allows players to experience the magical adventure all over again with a little help from your friends. Imagine soaring between the Sky Islands on your purpose-built flying contraption with your friend by your side. Or perhaps taking down a Lynel from afar with your bow, while your online mate deals some savage up-close and personal blows to keep the enemy distracted.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom always rewarded innovative gameplay, and its depth of tools meant you could tackle the world any way you saw fit. Having that set of tools and a world to explore with a friend opens the game up even further to innovations. Building colossal deathtraps with a buddy has never sounded so appealing! The brief trailer showed just a glimpse of all the chaotic fun you can expect to get up to with friends. August 18 can't come quick enough.
Players in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Online aren't just restricted to playing as Link either. Characters like Ogres, NPCs and even different versions of the titular hero seem to be up for grabs. You can even play as inanimate objects such as trees or barrels, which might lead to some fun games of hide and seek among you and your friends. Trying to take down Demon King Ganondorf while your side-kick looks like a lamp post sounds like an absolute blast.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Online mod is a passion project for Kirbymimi who has a track record of creating fan-made mods for Nintendo games with mixed results. Early screenshots show up to four players all taking part online. Kirbymimi had a similar project in the works for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild but it was shut down by Nintendo back in 2023. Hopefully, this new one slips under the radar as getting to explore such an amazing sandbox with friends sounds like the ultimate play session.
With an official The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake coming very soon, it's great to see fans are still breathing new life and creating new content for the beloved franchise. Official or not, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is such an instant classic that any new content, new ways to play or even DLC are very much welcomed by the Zelda fanbase. Perhaps if the mod is successful, Nintendo will consider making an official online version themselves. We can but dream!
