4 DC Heroes Doctor Doom Would Destroy, And 4 That Would Destroy Him
The Marvel Universe has a wealth of amazing villains to draw from. Thanos, Galactus, and Apocalypse are just the tip of a very large iceberg of evil that the Avengers, X-Men, and every other hero has to deal with on a constant basis. But, of all the great villains in the Marvel toy chest, there may be none who are greater than Doctor Doom. The ruler of Latveria, Doom has grown from being just a threat to The Fantastic Four to being perhaps the greatest danger in the multiverse. This is a man who, when faced with a reality where he was able to take over the world and rule as a benevolent king, destroyed that universe out of jealousy and rage.
Yes, in Marvel Comics, there is no one who holds a candle to Doom. The only one who can defeat him is himself, which his hubris makes happen quite often. But if Doom were to travel to the DC Universe, he would find himself in a world with beings more powerful than any he has faced before. In some cases, Doctor Doom would make short work of the heroes of DC, but in others, he would find himself overpowered and taken down a notch or two, along with suffering some serious bruises and, more than likely, a few broken bones, if not just outright being killed.
Doom VS Zatanna: DOOM WINS
She may go around in a top hat and fishnets, but don't let the Vegas-style attire fool you; Zatanna is one of the most skilled magic users in the DC Universe. Trained by her father, she has faced off against some of the deadliest beings from across the many planes of existence. She has been both a member of the Justice League and the leader of its magical arm, Justice League Dark. All of this is to say that Zatanna is not someone to be taken lightly.
But, for all her power, for all she can do, Zatanna has never faced someone like Doctor Doom on her own. The magic she could handle without much of a problem, but the technology would be a real problem for her. And that problem would almost certainly lead to her getting taken out by Doom, no matter how hard she fights.
Doom VS Mister Terrific: DOOM LOSES
Doctor Doom is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe, but he doesn't even crack the top 10 of his own reality. Mister Terrific, on the other hand, sits pretty high in the rankings for smartest person in the DCU. That difference in mental ability would make all the difference if the two were to face off.
While Doom's magic could be an issue for Terrific, the hero has faced magic users in the past and come out on top. And when it comes to science, Michael Holt is no slouch. The battle wouldn't be pretty, and Mister Terrific wouldn't walk away unscathed, but he has the tools and the talent to take Doctor Doom down.
Doom VS Superman: DOOM WINS
Superman is the epitome of the superhero. He is the first. He is the blueprint. He is a man who do all he can to make the world — and the universe — a better place. The Last Son of Krypton has battled gods, faced impossible odds, and been handed horrible blows (including dying), but none of it has ever stopped him from doing what is right and winning the day. Heck, Superman is so pure and good that he can lift Mjölnir. And yet, with all of that, he still wouldn't be able to take down Doctor Doom in a one-on-one battle.
There are two problems with Superman that would lead to his defeat at the hands of Doom: his compassion and his weakness to magic. The magic one is simple enough: Superman has no defenses against magic, and Doctor Doom is a skilled sorcerer. But the second problem isn't as clear cut. What truly makes Superman great is his belief that everyone can be good. This has paid off more often than it hasn't, as some of the Man of Steel's greatest adversaries, like Lex Luthor and Doomsday, have, at times, joined the side of the angels.
But Doom will never become a hero. He has no interest in being loved, only in ruling over all he sees. And, because of that, Superman will underestimate Doom. He will try to reason with him. He will pull his punches when the only hope in stopping Doom is to take him down before he can act. And that will cost Superman dearly.
Doom VS The Spectre: DOOM LOSES
Doctor Doom has faced off against some very powerful beings. He's even faced off against gods and once stole the Beyonder's power. But in both the Marvel and DC universes, there is one capital 'G' God who is more powerful than all others. In the Marvel universe, this being is called The One-Above-All. For the DC universe, it is known as The Presence. Whatever name this God of gods goes by, it never really gets involved with any of the stuff that is going on. But, in the DC universe, this God does have someone who handles business for them: the Spectre.
The literal embodiment of God's divine wrath, Spectre exists only to lay judgment on those who deserve it, and you can bet all the money you have that Doctor Doom deserves judgment. Doom's knowledge of science and sorcery isn't nearly enough to help him take on the Spectre, even if they have somewhat similar wardrobes.
Doom VS Flash (Wally West): DOOM WINS
Wally West started off as the sidekick to Barry Allen, the second Flash, before taking on the mantle himself, making him one of the most experienced superheroes around. And Wally has been put through the wringer more than once, so he knows how to handle himself and come out on top. All the same, he's going to get his butt whupped by Doctor Doom, all because he would sooner sacrifice himself than use deadly force on someone else, and Doom would use that to his advantage.
Old school fans will remember William Messner-Loebs and Greg LaRocque's Flash #50 when Vandal Savage took Wally's closest friends and family hostage, made Wally stand on a device that took away his speed, and then shot him square in the chest. That could only happen because Wally saw the people he loves were in danger and played a game he knew he would lose, and that was before he was a married man with three kids. Like Savage, Doom wouldn't be afraid to use Wally's love to weaken him, and then use that weakness to destroy him.
Doom VS Big Barda: DOOM LOSES
Big Barda was born and raised in the firepits of Apokolips. She spent her childhood being routinely tortured by Granny Goodness and proved herself to be so unbeatable, so powerful, that Granny made her the leader of the Female Furies. And, despite knowing nothing but pain, violence, and hate her whole life, Big Barda instantly changed her ways when she saw Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle. From that moment on, Barda used her raw power for good, teaming up with the rebels of Apokolips and, in time, traveling to Earth with her husband.
As a member of the New Gods, Big Barda is unlike any being Doctor Doom has ever faced before. She has no weakness to magic, and the technology of the New Gods, like Barda's Mega-Rod, are far more powerful than anything Doom has. So, unless Doctor Doom can get his hands on some Radion - the only substance the New Gods are vulnerable to - he doesn't stand much of a chance. And even if Doom had some Radion, he would need a lot of it. Barda's Apolaliptian Armor is designed to withstand multiple blasts from the toxic substance.
Doom VS Martian Manhunter: DOOM WINS
Martian Manhunter is one of the most beloved DC characters of all time, and also one of the most powerful. He's strong, he can turn intangible and invisible, he can change shape, and he can read minds. All of this makes J'onn J'onnz a real problem for the villains of the DC Universe. But J'onn also has one of the most annoyingly simple weaknesses: fire. As Batman says in Darwyn Cooke's iconic New Frontier...
"It took a seventy-thousand dollar sliver of meteor to stop the one in Metropolis. With you, all I need is a penny for a book of matches."
Doctor Doom has no problem conjuring up some fire. Heck, the guy likes to stand around in it — just Google "Doctor Doom fire" and you'll see plenty of examples. While Martian Manhunter has been able to somehow avoid fire in most of his battles, Doom isn't going to let the last Martian off that easy. He'll heat things up right and take J'onn down just about as quickly as it takes to light a match.
Doom VS Superboy-Prime: DOOM LOSES
The biggest problem Superman or any Kryptonian faces if they were to go up against Doctor Doom is their extreme weakness to magic. But there's one person in the DC Universe who has all the powers of a Kryptonian under a yellow sun without any of the disadvantages: Superboy-Prime. And, adding to just how much trouble Doctor Doom would be if he happened to cross paths with Prime, this is a hero who has a very specific advantage that few other heroes possess.
Superboy-Prime knows that he lives in a comic book universe, and he happens to be a very big comic book nerd. And while most of his comics knowledge seems to be based around the DC heroes, he's recently shown that he's also up to date on Marvel's books, as seen in Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora's Superman #37 where he yells about Spider-Man and Mary Jane's lack of a relationship. This would suggest that Superboy-Prime would know quite a lot about Doctor Doom's past and could use that against him. And, while Prime has been trying to play by the rules and not kill anyone, there's no reason he couldn't go a little harder on someone like Doom if needed. All of this is to say that if Doom ran into Prime, it would not go well for Latveria's favorite son.
