PlayStation Just Confirmed Our First Major PS6 Game
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of PlayStation 6's official lineup to see if the console, which is poised to be incredibly expensive, will actually be worth it. While many will likely be there on day one, for some, only a handful of major first-party projects would be enough to convince them to take the plunge and splurge on a potentially prohibitively expensive piece of hardware. Fortunately, it seems like Sony is somewhat aware of this, as it has announced what the very first PS6 game will be.
This is pretty great news for those concerned about the PlayStation 6's expected price point, as it gives them an indication of what to expect on launch day. It is also great news for fans of a particular PlayStation franchise, as it looks set to fully return when the PS6 releases. However, the announcement won't best please everyone, especially as it both confirms that this title will not get a physical release, and potentially excludes other major Sony franchises from being one of the first PS6 exclusives.
The PlayStation 6 Isn't That Far Away
After announcing God of War: Laufey's official 2027 release date, Santa Monica Studios, the Sony-owned developer, also confirmed that it was working on a new project. It was, of course, the next God of War, a title that many have been anticipating since the release of God of War: Ragnarök all the way back in 2022. Naturally, many are excited to see it release, although they'll likely have to wait quite a while, as it is unlikely to release until 2028 at the very least.
Interestingly, however, this positions it perfectly to be the first official PlayStation 6 announcement. The PS6's official release date is thought to be somewhere around late 2027, but could potentially be as late as 2028 or even 2029 according to a Bloomberg report that claims, due to the ongoing memory shortages, Sony is contemplating delaying the console further. If that's true, and the PS6 doesn't release until around 2028, God of War 6 could very much be the first game to launch for it, or, at the very least, a confirmed title for the console.
Of course, much like when the PlayStation 5 released, it is extremely likely that the upcoming God of War 6 will also release on the PS5, even if its launch date coincides with that of the PlayStation 6. So, fans of the series shouldn't worry too much about being locked out of the experience if they don't feel like upgrading to the next-gen console.
It is also entirely possible that the memory shortages push the PS6 back further, and Santa Monica will simply release the next God of War on PS5 exclusively and later enhance it for the PS6. However, based on the fact that Laufey is releasing in early 2027, and God of War 6, while in active development, is likely still a while away, it very much seems like Santa Monica Studio's next game will end up launching for the PS6.
How Much Will The PlayStation 6 Cost?
Currently, Sony has not announced an official price point for the PlayStation 6, likely because it is still trying to find ways of reducing it as much as possible. However, as a consequence of the rising cost of RAM, it is extremely likely that it will cost a hefty sum and potentially price out a lot of folks invested in the hobby. This is based on the fact that the PS5 Pro, which one would expect to be a weaker piece of hardware, currently costs $899.99 after the recent round of price hikes.
To put it into perspective, the PS4 Pro cost $399 at the time of the PS5's release. The PS5 cost $499 for the standard edition in 2020 and $399 for the digital edition. It is unlikely, then, that the PS6 will cost less than the PS5 Pro, and will, at the absolute minimum, cost around $899. However, fans are likely looking at a cost of around $1,000, if not significantly more, for the PlayStation 6 when it launches. That's an astronomically high price, especially when the rising cost of video games themselves is taken into consideration.
Of course, fans will have to see at launch whether or not they can justify the increased price. If the PS6 does end up costing more than double its predecessor on release day, it could pose a huge problem, not just for fans, but for games like God of War 6 that end up releasing on the console. Naturally, all of this is pure speculation based on current trends, prices, and the previous generation. However, those interested in a PlayStation 6 really shouldn't get their hopes up that it'll be much cheaper.
