Since 2020, Sam has written over 2,500 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game.

Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, got context around some AI drama, and revealed how Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games.

Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on more than one occasion.

He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times

Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises.

When you think of the ten biggest games of all time, you think of Grand Theft Auto 5, Tetris, Minecraft, Wii Sports, and Super Mario Bros. Typically, you don't tend to bundle the indie title Human Fall Flat in with those. It deserves to be, though.

As the game celebrates its tenth anniversary, developer No Brakes Games and publisher Curve Games have revealed that their puzzle-platform game has sold over 60 million copies, leapfrogging Super Mario Bros. in the process.

Human Fall Flat Becomes 11th Best-Selling Game Ever, Overtakes Super Mario Bros. NES

An argument could be made that Super Mario Bros. on the NES is the most iconic video game of all time. It was the first home-console title to feature Mario, and has been credited with saving the video game industry from the 1983 crash. There cannot be a single gamer in the world who isn't aware of it.

Human Fall Flat, on the other hand, feels a lot more niche. Geared towards a younger, more whimsical audience, the game was released in 2016, exactly ten years ago. It was created by a single developer and came about by accident when play testers found the game's physics far more enjoyable than the detective game it was supposed to be.

As part of a tenth-anniversary update, No Break Games and Curve Games have revealed that Human Fall Flat has now sold more copies than Super Mario Bros., surpassing 60 million.

That figure makes it the 11th best-selling video game ever released, overtaking Super Mario Bros. and widening the gap between itself and games like The Sims, Stardew Valley, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

*Tetris' sales figures are contentious. Its 520m figure consists of every iteration of the game sold since its release. Some breakdowns have it sitting at 520m, while others break each iteration down, with EA's mobile version the best-selling of all at 100m units.

Human Fall Flat's tenth anniversary will be celebrated with a new level inspired by classic levels including Mansion, Mountain, Demolition, Castle, Water, Powerplant, and Aztec.
